Guest guest
Marjorie, I know I didn't elaborate much. I am not saying I think thyroid problems are the root cause of rosacea but for someone who has pre-rosacea skin or mild rosacea already, I believe thyroid problems can exacerbate the condition by causing flushing and/or progression of other rosacea symptoms due to body temperature changes/overheating. I have read many posts on this board from people who believe their rosacea has a thermoregulatory/body temperature out of whack component to it for whatever reason. Some people feel their body thermostat is off-usually making them too hot- and don't know why. I have read posts in the archives from people who had thyroid problems and thought that may be the cause of their flushing/rosacea progression. My rosacea flared twice both times from hormonal disturbances causing my body to overheat. The first time I did not have flushing, I was just hot and sweaty all the time. 2nd time I did flush, so I think whether you flush or not, rosacea can progress from the same heat trigger. I had thermo flushing as well as rapid heart rate/autonomic nerve system flushing. I believe this may happen with thyroid disturbances also. Thyroid problems can cause or go along with hormonal disturbances, which can be a rosacea trigger in itself. I do not know about all the different types of thyroid problems- -I was speaking of hyperthyroidism in particular. From what I have read in Dr. Nase's book, too much thyroid hormone increases internal heat production which stimulates thermoregulatory flushing. This can happen if one has hyperthyroidism for whatever reason including a tumor. He also states that thyroid releasing hormone is a dilator medication which can cause flushing. Of course not everyone who has these problems will have rosacea, just as not everyone who has gastric disturbances, allergies or hormonal problems has rosacea, but these can be triggers. Dr. Nase discusses many things in his book that cause an increase in body temp. and/or heart rate as being associated with rosacea. > I think the connection here would be flushing. Thyroid problems mess with > your body temperature. The overheating and rapid heartbeat can lead to flushing. I wouldn't think so, . If so, then *any* overactive thyroid, such as those caused by tumor or ingestion of exogenous thyroxin, would be associated with rosacea, and that's not true to my knowledge -- only thyroid conditions with an autoimmune origin (I don't even recall if it's only Grave's (hyperactive) or Hashimoto's (hypoactive), or both) And if so, other conditions that increase body temperature and heart rate (such as chronic amphetamine use, or subacute bacterial endocarditis) would be expected to be associated with rosacea, and I've not seen any evidence to support that. Finally, other autoimmune conditions are associated with rosacea. Remember too that not all rosaceans flush, or flush only minimally.
