Guest guest
Sharon, I am sorry that I don't have any answers for you. Instead, I have a question. Where did you get your prune nectar? Thanks! Jeni Lynn How long to heal? My son started the SCD about two weeks ago. Last fall he had lost 3 pounds, gained one back by January, but has stayed the same since. Assuming that his stomach was injured causing him not to absorb his food (no question in my mind), how long would it take for his stomach to heal (the villi) and start absorbing food? The reason I ask is because he still hasn't gained weight, even though he is eating very nicely and enjoys his SCD food. Will it take weeks? Months? Or does it depend on how much damage was done? Also, are there any tests that could be done to view the damage and then estimate time to repair? I know these are probably ridiculous questions no one can answer, but perhaps hearing your experiences will give me an idea. is eating eggs, avocado, banana, pears, chicken, carrots, squash, fish, pear/apple sauce, and is drinking Welch's grape juice cut with water, pure honey, also gets Prune nectar in the morning. I add olive oil in every chance I get to give him more fat. I made the yogourt but was afraid to give it to him too early so it is in the fridge looking scary (must have someone do something about that!). I attempted coconut milk but made such a mess of the kitchen I am still finding coconut pieces everywhere (will gather the courage and correct tools to try it again soon). Is it too soon for the nut cereal? All of his food is pureed. BM-wise is still on the constipated side of things, although his stools are less hard and no longer peel the wallpaper. He'e gone a few times on his own but still needs help. Seizures are not completely gone but are definately improved. Cognitively (he's 3 years old but maybe 3 months old congnitively) he has started to tell us, in a very obvious way, when he is " done " with feeding, play, therapy etc. This just started a few days ago and is pretty amazing to me. Any help, comments, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Sharon Cruikshank
Guest guest
I use Welch's Prune Nectar - it's 100% prune juice. I live in Canada and I get it from the local grocery. Guest guest
Unfortunately, there is no real way to answer your question about how long to heal. I am curious about how you turned your kitchen into a disaster by making coconut milk. It sounds like something that you might have won money for on Funniest Home Videos. Just go to the health food store and buy unsweetened coconut flakes or dessicated coconut. Then follow the recipe on pecanbread.com for making the coconut milk. The only mess will be washing your blender, your tea towel and strainer. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/

Guest guest
Hello all! I will check my local grocery store for the Welch's Prune Nectar. In case I can't find it, does anyone know where I can get prune nectar on line or in VA? Jeni Lynn Re: How long to heal? > > I use Welch's Prune Nectar - it's 100% prune juice. Guest guest
Sharon, I certainly can't give you a specific answer since every body is different with damage and healing, but weight gain is our biggest concern so I can tell you about my 3 year old son. From age 15 months to the following year he only gained a half pound. That's when we started seeing a DAN! Dr. (it will be a full year in March). He started gaining and then lost and really started going down hill again before we started SCD. He has been on the diet for almost 4 months. The first week he got down to a " scary skinny " where we could see every bone and muscle definition in arms and back when he climbed into bed. But he got back to a " very skinny " state very quickly and stayed for along time gaining maybe about 2 oz. every couple weeks. Then after the 3 month regression he really started to put it on. He got up to a full pound weight gain since SCD and then got sick, very sick, but is gaining it back much quicker than he used to. I weigh him every Monday on a healthometer baby scale so I'm looking forward to this coming Monday. If I let myself weigh him before then I can start getting obsessive. But I believe the weight will come. My daughter had been in the 45th% as an infant. When she began to eat table food and was been weaned she stopped gaining and soon began to lose. She was having a lot of diarrhea and undigested food in her stools. By 18 months she was barely clinging to 5th%. I actually had her drink a whole sippy of watered down juice in the car ride to the Drs. in hopes to keep her on the chart because I didn't want pressure to take her to the awful GIs around. We were seeing a DAN! for my son and wanted freedom to look into things for my daughter. After 2 months on SCD she was easily 10th% and I can't wait to bring her to her 2 year check up. I don't know how fast or how slow your son will gain, but if it doesn't happen for months don't get discouraged. Oh, I should also say my son eats an average or 300-400 more calories a day since on SCD and we are still this slow with weight gain. Healing takes a lot of energy. You can go on fitday.com for a calorie counting program, but it sounds like he is doing well in that area. Great sign! Guest guest
Hi Sharon, > My son started the SCD about two weeks ago. The reason I ask is because he > still hasn't gained weight, even though he is eating very nicely and > enjoys his SCD food. Will it take weeks? Months? Or does it depend on > how much damage was done? It depends on how much damage was done, how fast he heals and how much he eats. I was extremly underweight when I began the diet and had a voracious appetite for months. When I finally put back on the lost weight my appetite leveled off. But, it did take a while before I stopped losing weight even though my symptoms were gone - it took extra energy to heal and for my body to adjust to the change in food. It takes extra food energy to heal, to add the weight and for kids - to grow; so don't be too suprised if he has a big appetite. Giving him easy to digest foods, with lots of good fats and calories will help. >Also, are there any tests that could be done > to view the damage and then estimate time to repair? There are colonoscopies, endoscopies etc. but they would be performed by a specialist and if you don't need them I wouldn't recommend getting them. Besides, they wouldn't be able to tell you definitively how long it will take to heal either. I know these are > probably ridiculous questions no one can answer, but perhaps hearing > your experiences will give me an idea. > is eating eggs, avocado, banana, pears, chicken, carrots, squash, > fish, pear/apple sauce, and is drinking Welch's grape juice cut with > water, pure honey, also gets Prune nectar in the morning. If he has constipation it may even help if he is ready to digest it. > > BM-wise is still on the constipated side of things, although his > stools are less hard and no longer peel the wallpaper.
