Guest guest
Hi Rosemary, first, a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to !! Hope he has a georgeous day! I have found the following about the mental health of chronically ill children. Don't know if it helps though. Is a loner by choice or by fate? Fiona likes to be on her own or together with one or two friends. But she dislikes larger groups. Peace Torsten Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 2002 Jun;156(6):533-9 Related Articles, Links A randomized, controlled trial of a community-based support program for families of children with chronic illness: pediatric outcomes. Chernoff RG, Ireys HT, DeVet KA, Kim YJ. Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Hopkins University, 600 N Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21287, USA. rchernof@... BACKGROUND: Children with chronic illnesses have a heightened risk for mental health problems. OBJECTIVES: To develop, implement, and evaluate child outcomes of a 15-month, community-based, family- support intervention designed to reduce risk for poor adjustment and mental health problems in children with 1 of 4 chronic illnesses (diabetes mellitus, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, or moderate to severe asthma) and their mothers. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled clinical trial design with multiple measures of mental health based on both child and parent reports taken 1 year apart. SETTING: Community-based intervention linked to subspecialty and general pediatric clinics and practices in Baltimore, Md. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred thirty-six mothers and children aged 7 to 11 years with diabetes mellitus, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, or moderate to severe asthma. INTERVENTION: The program, provided by " experienced mothers " and child life specialists, included telephone contacts, face-to-face visits, and special family events. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Outcomes were measured using the following instruments: the Personal Adjustment and Role Skills Scale III, the Children's Depression Inventory, the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, and the Self-Perception Profile for Children. RESULTS: The experimental group's mean adjustment score increased over the intervention period while the control group's mean adjustment score decreased. Analysis of variance demonstrated that the intervention had a significant main effect on postintervention adjustment controlling for baseline scores (P =.01). Using a cutoff score indicating maladjustment, the percentage of experimental group children in the maladjustment range fell from 19% at baseline to 10% after the intervention; the percentage of control group children in the maladjustment range rose from 15% at baseline to 21% after the intervention. The effect of the intervention was more pronounced for children who had low physical self-esteem than for those who had moderate to high physical self-esteem at the beginning of the program. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate modest positive effects of a family support intervention in promoting the adjustment of children with selective chronic health conditions. Including child life specialists in a community-based intervention may be especially salient for children with chronic illnesses who have low physical self-esteem. The intervention had a similar outcome for all diagnostic groups, suggesting that it could be effective for children with any chronic illness and implemented in a variety of pediatric settings. Guest guest
Rosemary, Both mine are outgoing. Eilish is very outgoing. They also have loads of friends. So I think maybe their personality is a family trait and not Cf related? Liam 8 wocf & Eiolish 5wcf Personality Traits Has anything been written about the personality traits of people with CF? Guest guest
My daughter with CF is also the most outgoing of all my children. My son is very reserved. My older daughter is somewhere in the middle, and Mycah is a social butterfly as they say. So if I was doing a study based on three, I would have concluded that CF makes kids more outgoing! Guest guest
Hi Rosemary, Have you ever read books about the personality traits of birth order? First borns, middle children, and youngest children tend to have average certain traits. I'm curious where your daughter falls in the birth order? Also -- please don't think I'm whacko (or more whacko than usual!) -- have you ever had your children's astrology charts drawn? I don't mean just the cookie-cutter horoscopes based upon their Zodiac sign! I mean actually taking their date, time, and place of birth and constructing the chart. I had one done on both my children and it was truly amazing -- fit them to the T. For example, my son (with CF) was born July 4, 1979 at 10:24 a.m. in Stillwater, OK. This makes his sun in Cancer, Virgo ascendant and Scorpio Moon. The sun sign is what everyone looks at when they ask, " Hey, dude... what's your sign? " And it's that horoscope you look for when you flip through pages of women's magazines. But your sun sign only tells part of the personality. The sun sign is how you react to the world -- how YOU see the world. Your ascendent is " the mask " -- it's how the world sees you. And the moon rules emotions. So, in a nutshell, being a Cancer, tradition says he would have strong ties to home, family... love to do home things like cook, eating, entertaining, tend to be crabby, and cautious with money. Having a Virgo ascendent means people perceive him to be exacting, meticulous, perfectionistic, with a questioning mind. And that Scorpio moon (ruling feelings) makes him passionate, deep-feeling, but often keeping feelings to self--secretive, if you will. Again, my children's birth charts are amazing replicas of who they really are! My daughter is a Scorpio with Libra ascendent (also called the rising sign) and a Gemini moon. She doesn't have CF. She is a private person (Scorpio), deep-feeling and deep thinking but people don't see that side of her. People tend to see her Libra ascendant and judge her on that: beautiful, cheerful, peacemaker. Her Gemini moon is what gives her the " airy " quality about her that people think, " Oh, my God -- she's have above average IQ but then does these dumb blond things! " I've long felt that one of the reasons both my children have always gotten along well with each other -- true companionship and understanding for one another -- is that they are both born in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the water signs). You tend to get along best with someone who is of like sign. And because 's moon (Scorpio) is in 's sun (Scorpio) this adds to their innate understanding of each other. Astrology aside, it's true that these two kids have always had such a strong bond. They are nurturing and protective of each other. They have always been concerned when the other was ill or injured, and protective if they thought someone was going to hurt their sibling. I've also noticed that 's first girlfriends were always Aries -- a fire sign. His basic cautious nature gravitated to the more impulsive people (Aries are known for impulsivity). If you mix a fire sign with a water sign, you often get nice steamy results! But you must also be careful that the water doesn't try to put out the fire. 's last love interest (and I hope it continues to something deeper!) is also a water sign -- a Cancer born on the cusp of Leo, so she exhibits both water and fire tendencies. on the other hand, all her last boyfriends have been Pisces -- another water sign, and perfectly compatiable to her. She had a Leo (fire sign) boyfriend for a very short time but he was very firey -- jealous of her time -- to the point when she broke it off we thought we'd have to contact the police for stalking. I think she decided to only date water signs after that! Anyway, I'm rambling... I think it's just fun and comforting to see how our children's birth charts do relate to them. A birth chart is often referred to as a blue print to the soul. If you learn how to read them it can be a nice road map. For fun, if you want to plot your own birth charts, go to www.astro.com For accuracy, you will need the time of your birth. The program does all the configuring for you, so you don't have to try to figure out time zones, which can be a pain! Have fun!
