Haylie,

About 5 or 6 years ago, (before I knew what rosacea was or was

accurately diagnosed with it) I tried Proactiv because my face was

slightly breaking out and somewhat splotchy. Also, one dermatologist

told me to use products with benzoyl peroxide which is one of the

main ingredients in Proactive. For me it was a big mistake. I had

an immediate reaction which made my face very dry, sore, and reddish

like a severe sunburn. There was no way I could continue to use the

products for more than a week. They did give me my money back but

were going to charge me for the shipping (which was not cheap, as I

remember) until I called them and argued because the infomercial said

nothing about that. They eventually reimbursed me for the original

shipping but not the return. Bottom line is I found it to be one of

the harshest things I've put on my face. I would not recommend it to

someone with rosacea. But if you try it, I hope it works.

I can't recall exactly what I did after using Proactive. It was in

the beginning of my rosacea which seemed to get much worse right

after the Proactive. I never thought that it was the cause of the

worsening but now that I think about it, it might have been. Since

then, my routine of dealing with rosacea is not easy and not very

routine. I don't normally use any cleanser on my face (except

occasionally the Cetaphil gentle cleansing bar - maybe once a week).

I use Metrogel, take oral antibiotics (currently Biaxin), try to

avoid my triggers, and have recently started taking Nicomide. I've

been on various antibiotics almost continuously for over four years

now and luckily have never had any bad side effects. So far I'm

really pleased with the Nicomide and think its really helping but

I've been on it less than two months. I've posted about it before,

and am waiting for more time to go by to see how things continue

before I specifically post about it again. My face does get dry and

its been work finding a moisturizer that doesn't irritate. I go

between Neutrogena Moisture Sensitive Skin and Tolerin Facial

Skincare (the Neutrogena is cheaper but sometimes seems to irritate,

the Tolerin is lighter). Anyway, I'm not sure if I answered your

question (your comment on Proactive and chemical burn is right on the

money), but it was shortly after Proactive that my face became unable

to handle any kind of cleanser.

Take care,

> i had the same reaction to using proactive for only three days.

this was last July and I am still in agony from the effect. Since

then I have been to 4 dermatologists (who diagnosed me with rosacea).

I agree with you on the " severe sunburn " reaction. I refer to my

condition as a chemical burn. I only tried proactive as my brother

uses it for his acne and he suggested it for my acne. Now I would

give anything to stop this nightmare. I have spent hundreds on creams

with no luck. my skin is very sensitive with enlarged pores and has

surface redness all day. It gets worse as the day progresses, I think

that is why they said I have rosacea. but the latest derm said I have

nerve damage and made me an appointment at a pain clinic for august

20!!! 7 months!!! My acne has gone away, and I attribute that to

copious amounts of water every day (to hydrate the damaged areas) and

no alcohol. Please let me know how you fixed up the damage done by

proactive.

Hi,

Kathy Fields, one of the derms who formulated this product, used to

be my derm. She told me to stay away from ahas like glycolic acid

since that aggravates rosacea. I think one or two of the products in

Proactive has glycolic acid in it. I know the doctors recommend

Proactiv for rosaceans. ly, I'm surprised at that, considering

what I was told by Dr. Fields.

Take care,

Matija

At the heart of the therapeutic barrage that is Proactiv, is, simply,

benzoyl peroxide. All the aha's, " scrubbing cleansers " , astringents,

etc. are just prepping the skin for maximum response to the benzoyl

peroxide. If you want to try benzoyl peroxide on rosacea skin just

get a good aqueous bp gel like Brevoxyl 4. All the other irritating

ingredients can only harm rosaceans. Stay away from the nose with

the bp as well. As usual only one application of bp per day and you

might want to start off every other day for a week to two weeks and

then gradually increase to once a day.

A favorite non antibiotic topical treatment regimen is using the bp

gel on all areas except the nose and use a 5% sulfer lotion on the

nose, with the bp applied a maximum of once a day. If this still

does not clear the papules and pustules, add Differin cream at night

keeping the bp every morning. Plewig and Kligman say that the

maximum inhibition of P acnes are acheived by once a day bp

application. Therefore, twice a day will just irritate more. To get

increased papulopustular clearing, adding the Differin works by

normalizing follicular keritanization -- a different mechanism.

Also, bp is for papulopustular rosacea only. Those with erythema

mainly will not be helped by bp.
