Details for march & rally in Sacramento

12 Chavez grandchildren join trek Friday;

route, schedule set for weekend events

As the 150-mile, 10-day farm workers " March for

the Governor's Signature " nears Sacramento, 12 of Cesar

Chavez's 31 grandchildren join the marchers Friday

for the last three days of the trek. Ranging in age

from 14 to 32, all of them were raised in the movement

their grandfather founded.

Participating Friday in the march are Chavez

Delgado, 32; Chavez Delgado, 30; Chavez,

29; Chavez , 24; Cesar L. Chavez, 21;

Chavez Villarino, 19; Chavez, 19; Arthur

Salvador , 17; Chavez, 17; Chavez

Villarino, 16; Chavez, 15; and Chavez,

14.

The march as well as fasts and vigils at the state

Capitol are part of a United Farm Workers campaign

urging Gov. Gray to sign SB 1736, the UFW-sponsored

bill granting farm workers mediation and arbitration

to win union contracts when growers drag out negotiations.

Meanwhile, march organizers announced routes and

schedules for the last three days. A flatbed truck

for still and TV news photographers will immediately

proceed the march Saturday and Sunday. Risers and mult

boxes will be at the rally site Sunday.

Friday, Aug. 23, 2002--Walnut Grove to Elk Grove

7 a.m. mass, 7:30 a.m. march starts, both at St. 's

Catholic Church, 14012 Walnut Ave. (at 2nd St.) in

Walnut Grove.

6 p.m. rally at lin Elementary School at 4011

Hood-lin Rd. at lin Blvd. in Elk Grove.

Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002--Elk Grove to Cesar Chavez

Plaza (downtown Sacramento)

8 a.m. march starts at lin Elementary School at

4011 Hood-lin Rd. at lin Blvd. in Elk Grove.

March proceeds north on lin Blvd.; right on Mack

Road; left on Center Parkway; stop for lunch at Roy

J. Nielson Park (Center & Tangerine); north on Center

Parkway; left on " A " Parkway; right on lin Blvd.;

left on Sutterville Rd.; break at Curtis Park; east

on 10th Ave.; left on lin Blvd.; left on Broadway;

right on 21st St.; left on " I " St.; end at Cesar Chavez

Plaza (10th & " I " Sts.).

6 p.m. mass at Cesar Chavez Plaza.

Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002--Cesar Chavez Plaza to state

Capitol

10 a.m. march starts at Cesar Chavez Plaza

March proceeds west on " I " St.; left on 7th St.; left

on Capitol Mall; left on 10th St.; to state Capitol's

north steps (11th & L Sts.).
