While we're on this topic, I recently posted this in a private email

and thought it worth sharing with the group:

There is progress in cutaneous cooling for the treatment of deeper

veins and most particularly in delivering *optimum* energy without

damaging the skin. Researchers can now automatically measure skin

temperature response after a " shot " with an IPL / laser device and

auto-calibrate the energy and duration for the next shot. It

will probably take a couple of years for this to make it into the

treatment room, but companies like ESC medical (now called Lumenis?)

and others are progressing at a cracking rate (despite their recent

shareholder problems) and patents have been filed.

In summary, laser /IPL treatment " per-se " is probably not going to

advance hugely (there are physical limitations with what can be

achieved); it will be optimising the delivery of the " perfect "

energy / duration / wavelength automatically for a particular person

where the research is most active.

I post below a relevant article URL (Skin temperature measurements

during intense pulsed light emission).
