She had her first shunt put in when she was a year old and the same week we found out about her CF we found out she needed her shunt revised for the first time. It was the week every I think I was in limbo for a long time after that. It was such a shock to not only know she has to deal with hydrocephalus but also CF. Guest guest
Is her shunt related to Arnold Chiari malformation? This is too bizaar. There seems to be quite a few cfers with Arnold Chiari type symptoms. * difficulty swallowing * numbness in the arms or legs * headaches * acid reflux * dizziness * blurred vision * hydrocephalus Someone with Arnold Chiari can have all or some of these symptoms. The symptoms are usually worse when the person is tired. Bed rest typically helps to reduce the effects of the symptoms. There are varying degrees of Arnold Chiari malformation. The basic description of Arnold Chiari is that the brain stems extends too far down the spinal cord. This malformation can cause restricted spinal fluid flow and even apply pressure to the vagus nerve, which " could " cause the reflux action. Torsten found several medical abstracts connecting Arnold Chiari to CF. The connection is still not conclusive, but you really have to wonder! Abigail is scheduled to have surgery this month for her Arnold Chiari malformation. Just food for thought. :>) Gale > In a message dated 12/2/2002 3:48:13 PM Central Standard Time, > gale.harris@h... writes: > > > > > > If you don't mind, I was wondering what 's shunt is for? > > Thanks, > > Gale > > She also has hydrocephalus unrelated to her CF. Her neurosurgeon told us that her hydrocephalus was not related to her CF. You will have to send me more information on this. I have never heard anything about this.
