Hello kietzmans@...,

In reference to your comment:

è I remember why the doctor wants to do the EGD now

I went to the Hopkins site, but my computer is acting up...There is

something about EGD at the following:

http://hopkins-gi.org/pages/latin/templates/index.cfm?pg=disease1&organ=4&

disease=24&lang_id=1

Well, I was going to send this last night but got booted off. Maybe there is

more information at this site.

Hope this helps,

> I thought the bruising was caused by the pain meds?

Hi all,

This is an portion of one piece of research I found that speaks of

bruising with chronic pancreatitis:

Chronic pancreatitis can lead to pancreatic insufficiency as a

result of the replacement of acinar tissue with fibrous tissue.

Because the acini secrete pancreatic enzymes necessary for the

digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, dysfunction of

acinar tissue results in malabsorption of nutrients from the

small intestine. The patient may complain of bulky, fatty,

foul-smelling stools, weight loss, fever, malaise, and nausea

and vomiting. There also can be a negative nitrogen balance

resulting in wasting of the muscles, and malabsorption of the

fat-soluble vitamins resulting in easy bruising and bleeding from

mild injury. Inadequate absorption of calcium and vitamin B12

also can occur. Glucose intolerance due to insulin lack resulting

from degeneration of the islets of Langerhans is a late

manifestation of chronic pancreatitis.

Additionally, bruising along the flanks, abdomen and specifically

around the navel area also appears in many patients after an

acute pancreatitis attack.

I hope this information helps.

With hope and prayers,

Debbie,

Oddly enough, the condition of our nails and our hair often are

important indicators of our overall health status. This condition

with your nails is something that I hope you keep pushing for an

explanation for, especially if it is something that has appeared

rather suddenly. It could be a trauma to the nail bed, some type

of infection, or a sign of malnutrition, or even something else.

That might be a question to take to a dermatologist if you can't

get the answers from your other physician.

Please let us know how the test results go. I'm sure you are very

anxious to have some definitive answers.

With hope and prayers,
