Hi everyone,

My son's Kindergarten teacher may have a hampster given to her for the

classroom.

Do any of you have a hampster or have contact with one? If so, how are your

lungs? Is it hard to breathe? Do they carry any type of disease like birds

do? How dirty are they?

She asked for my permission and I told her that I'd ask his Dr. I'd like any

advice from anyone of you first. I want to know if I should have any doubts

or concerns. I want to feel comfortable with the decision I make regarding

the outcome of your comments on this issue. Firsthand knowledge is always

the best

Thanks,

from PA

The girls haven't gotten a hamster yet. I grew up with tons of them though.

They are fairly clean animals. They tend to go to the bathroom in one

spot of the cage. There are different types of bedding out there. The

cedar bedding has a nice odor to it, I " m not sure how that will affect the

lungs though. Wood skimmings are good for bedding and don't have much dust

to them. Teddy bear hamsters are extermly furry. I'm not sure about dander

though. As far as carring bugs like birds do, I " ve never heard of it but

hopefully someone else can help ya there.

Jen A. mom to 4, Yolo 3, and Phynix 6 months all w/cf.
