However, I think that quite a few people with food intolerances (the inability to digest something) also have allergic reactions as part of their symptoms. I base this comment on my participation in a celiac discussion group. Some of the participants report no or few symptoms when they accidentally ingest gluten. Some have digestive problems, and some -- like me -- have skin symptoms. A smaller handful report their throat burning, eyes irritated, nose running, flushing, pulse racing etc., etc., etc. when they come into contact with gluten. I theorize that after years of contact with a protein the body can't digest, the body builds up a histamine-type response, because it views the protein as a " foreign invader " . The closest analogy I can come with is a hairstylist developing an allergic reaction to hairdye after years of constant contact. This isn't the best analogy, however, because hairdye doesn't sit in the GI tract, undigested ...
