Yes, I have heard the news,,, and there were a few explanations through the

loop.. But to be honest,, I never heard a direct answer from the doctor

himself, as to what the complications were directed from ..maybe someone

could shed some light on this...michelle

The complication rate from the MGB (and the death rate) is far

lower than for any other bypass procedure.

Dr. R. has had only one death, that was a lady named ,

from Iceland, who died in April after her surgery, due to a

perforated bowel (leak). She developed an overwhelming

infection that did not respond normally to antibiotics.

's sister, Fanney, has had the surgery and has

posted on here several times since then that she strongly

believes in the procedure. Go to the April and May archives

and you will find some posts about .

Dr. R. mentioned in clinic a patient who needed a reversal due

to vomiting. That is one of the known possible complications of

the surgery (and any bypass surgery), but statistically, it is

less than 1%.

I've interviewed 97 of Dr. Rutledge's 657 patients and only one

had problems with vomiting. Two had leaks and recovered very

quickly. The majority were like me -- happy as peas to have had

the surgery, quick recovery, no problems.

Dr. Rutledge's paper prepared for the American Society of

Bariatric Surgeons has all these statistics and information

about complications in it. You can read it at

http://www.clos.net

Click on the second item in the center, where it says

" Read the Latest Draft Version of the First Paper on the MGB "

's death worried all of us. I had my surgery since her

death, as did most of the post-ops here. It is a sobering

thought, but death is indeed a possibility with any surgery.

Best wishes in making your decision, whatever it will be.

Kind regards,

This is what I read in an email from someone on this list. The patient has a

leak and it was repaired, but she did not respond to the antibiotic and the

reason was inconclusive. This can happen to anyone with any kind of surgery,

which was explained to me by my son in law who is also a physician. Life is

a risk guys. No way around it? The biggest risk though is being obese,

especially morbidly obese which is what I was. If I hadn't risk having my

surgery when I did then I would be already dead from all the problems that I

was having at the time of surgery. I would risk it again if I had too.

Nothing is worse than being obese and feeling like a a side show in a circus

and not having any energy and being depressed all the time. I rest my case.

Teilah,

I do not know of the case you speaking of. But, this is MAJOR surgery. You

ARE NOT made any guarantees to live through the procedure or have zero

complications. Many of you are new to this list. It is suggested you research

this and any other procedure very thoroughly. This procedure has an overall

complication rate of < six percent and mortality rate of 0.17 percent. These

are low numbers in the scientific and medical community. But, if it happens

to you, then of course it will seem too high. You are advised to visit the

site and know that information inside out. Dr R won't perform your surgery if

you are not informed to his satisfaction anyway. THERE IS INHERENT RISK OF

DEATH/COMPLICATIONS WITH ALL SURGICAL PROCEDURES (i.e.) tooth extractions,

caesarian sections, etc. Other physicians just don't readily publicize

negative outcomes. So, please be calm and rational, and do not evoke an

unnecessary state of panic among others who in the early stages of their

research. Many post op will be will to answer you questions based on their

personal experience. But, it is IMPERATIVE that you inform yourself. Any

question you have can be answered from the website. I suggest you memorize

that baby like most other post ops did. Then you won't be so fearful and you

will be able to proceed/or not proceed accordingly. In addition, Dr R is very

discriminating about who he will allow to have his surgery. So, again, please

research, because you may/may not even be a candidate.

If this new information is true, worse case scenario, this procedure is still

safer in terms of outcomes than ANY open or other lap procedure. Educate

yourself and make your decision to have/not have this procedure accordingly.

If you have researched morbid obesity, you will find that your risk of dying

from the disease states associated with morbid obesity is much greater than

with having the surgery. Just something to think about.

le

13 days post op and doing just grand.

T, Yes there has been one Death, we all suffered through it but no one more

that DR. Rutledge and 's Family, had many health problem and

this was her last effort to live. She had a leak and could not recover. It

was a rude awakening for all of us on the list waiting for our turn. It is a

possibility, I cried, I don't know why I thought this was like going to the

candy store everything was good. And it can be!

You can die from ant surgery!, 1 on 650 or more are great stats! It all

depends on you and your body, Theresa, this was not good for her (she is a

real sweetie) Last time I heard she was asking for beef stew, You say she is

back in the hospital? If you have any problems after the surgery speak up,

that is when things get complicated when people don't speak up right away!

My worst problem is my hormones going wacky, but that could happen just form

losing weight the hard way. You need to decide what you are willing to risk,

In my case I was not to heavy but i had (HAD!) health issues that eventually

would lead to a kidney transplant. So it was worth the risk to me. Dr. R's

tract record is one of the best! I would do it over in a heart beat, but I

would ask for more feet..lol Now joking aside pray about it, really pray

about it. It was the best abswer and clearest I have ever recieved, enough

said! God bless you on your journey, may it be a safe one.

Okay, okay...

Theresa (Taup111@...). Had her surgery April 10th (not in May), same

litter as , Sharon from MD, , Tonni, Bonnie and of course

yours truly,

Theresa has had problems with vomiting from the beginning. She was at home

and was hospitalized. When she came home from the hospital she finally

contacted Dr. R. and he said to come down and he'd take care of her. For

whatever reason she never made it down to NC. Was hospitalized again and

contacted Dr. R. to do the revision. Although I haven't personally heard

that the revision was done, I assumed it was because Dr. R.'s paper lists

four revisions to date and I recalled that as of the previous report stated

only three revisions. I have not heard from Theresa recently. In her last

email to me and my fellow littermates she stated she was on her way down to

have the revision done. To date she had lost about 70lbs and felt miserable.

As for , Dr. R. has not made a " formal " statement although her sister

has given her permission when he feels ready to do so. According to his

paper she died due to a perferated bowel I believe. I'm sure a day doesn't

go by that he doesn't think of her (I know none do for me). Hopefully after

he presents his paper and takes a much deserved vacation he'll take the time

to say something " official " .

I'm done now. :)

Hey ~

Your email was a great source of comfort!! Thanks so much for writing!!! You

have shared from the heart and I really appreciate it. Also, you have given

me many points to consider. Only I can make this decision so I want to be as

informed as possible.

It's obvious you have a great sense of peace about the surgery . . . I envy

that. Part of me is excited and part of me is afraid of what can happen. I am

going through the appropriate steps to get approved and will keep you posted

on my progress.

Bye for now, Teilah

Dear ~

Thanks SO MUCH for the information you shared. Somehow you put everything in

the proper perspective for me!!!! What happened to is so very sad. I

hear she had four children. However, I do feel better knowing the details.

You are right...death is indeed a possibility with any surgery.

Hi !

I don't think she posts to the list. Dr. Rutledge mentioned

her at the May 16 clinic. Someone else mentioned her to me

on the phone. I haven't seen any other discussion of her

Hi !

I don't think she posts to the list. Dr. Rutledge mentioned

her at the May 16 clinic. Someone else mentioned her to me

on the phone. I haven't seen any other discussion of her

here. Anyone with more details, please post.

Kind regards,

Yep! Someone made a comment before our surgeries that our litter would be a

" very special " one. Who would have guessed at the time that it would be for

complications.

That said, how are the rest of my littermates doing? 4/10 Litter roll call!
