Guest guest
Have you tried using the no phenols or other enzymes digestive enzymes to expand your childs diet at autismcoach.com there are specific enzymes that you can add while on the SCD diet that are geared for this scd diet and increasing your sons food possibilities this may help some with the gas.Have you tried any other products probiotics, colostrum,Peptizyde, zyme prime. My son cannot handle phenols when I feed him a apple he gets dark circles under his eyes so I have added the no phenol powder with the apples and know he can get apples. I love the SCD diet it is targeted against repairing the gut but you may also need to add extra help to increase foods in your sons diet. Not enough fiber can cause the intestine line to be more permeability and to much can cause constipation.Fruits and vegetables are good for constipation if your child is not allergic and if they are you can give then anyway by adding no phenols or the proper enzyme for instance Peptizyde is a enzyme blend to completely digest gluten and casean. My son gets gassy alot and its usually from to much fiber and constipation or from not enough fruits and vegetables in his diet. Im sure him not making the proper enzymes with his body naturally is causing some gas.And of course it can be from bacteria and yeast die off and thats a good sign. Hang in there . I found a test on the internet where we can order are own test to measure bacteria and yeast overgrowth and monitor are kids progress, I ordered one and will let you know how it turns out. www.crohns.net Suzanne szmidford@...> wrote: We're into our second day on the intro diet and ds is very gassy - he's eating spinach, beef, applesauce, diluted home-made apple juice. These are some of the only foods he is not allergic to that are suggested for the intro diet level. (The others are zucchini and pear and lamb, we're saving those for days 3 & 4, since we must rotate foods every 2 days). Should I presume that one (or more) of these foods doesn't agree with him? If so, what's my next step? Pull out one food at a time to find out what is the problem? My concern is that this could take a day or more, and I don't want to keep him on such a limited diet for so long. I was hoping to be able to add foods by the 3rd or 4th day. I'm sorry to have so many questions - it's hard to figure out how to do the intro diet with a child who has such few food choices. Advice please! Sometime gas is a die off symptom. If he ate these foods preSCD and didn't have gas then die off is the most likely cause. If he did not normally eat one of them (apple?) then that could be causing the gas or it could still be die off. How is he today? Guest guest
He ate spinach on a two-day rotation previously, but never as a mainstay of his diet. Now he's eating a 1/2 cup at every meal. Apples are also suspect, he's had an apple allergy in the past and we never gave it to him more than once a day. On the intro diet he's eating it at every meal, just because we don't have very many foods to choose from. His eczema is also flared, which leads me to beleive he's having al allergic reaction - probably to the apples. Yesterday we rotated to lamb, pears and zucchini (to which he has a mild allergy), and the gas seems to have cleared up. It's been very hard to find allergy-safe foods that are SCD-legal; he only tolerates about a dozen foods total due to IgE allergies, and most of those safe veggies are cabbages or root vegetables like rutabagas that are typically recommended on SCD for when the gut is more healed. We eliminated disaccharides a month ago, but deciding on which foods to use for the introductory stage of the diet has been difficult. In our case, it's hopefully the right choice of the lesser evils. Guest guest
In your particular case, I think you should stop feeding ALL foods that he has a true allergy to. Just skip the idea of an intro diet. Resume feeding any and all foods that are SCD LEGAL that he is NOT allergic to. To make those foods most easily digested, cook them and peel them (if it can be peeled). Please stop feeding any foods that he is allergic to. He will not get better if you continue to feed the allergenic foods. You might consider asking your doctor for a prescription for Gastrocrom to try to prevent your son from developing any new food allergies. I just realized this didn't come out very well. What I meant is that in your particular case I think that skipping the intro diet is appropriate. NO ONE SHOULD FEED a child a food that s/he has a true allergy to. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/

Guest guest
Jody, I appreciate your opinion on this! After 4 days on the intro diet, we're definitely ready to move on to other foods. The problem is that most of the foods he tolerates are not SCD legal, or are only recommended for the advanced part of the diet. Pretty soon, I'm probably going to have to jump ahead to Stage 3, and I was hoping to get a little healing done first before we do that. Do you have any advice about what advanced SCD legal foods are least irritating to the gut? He tolerates cabbage, brussel sprouts, rutabaga, celeriac, turnips, parsnips (all these roots I boil a long time and puree), and beets. He is only slightly allergic to squash, broccoli and asparagus, which I used to feed him regularly in rotation, before we started the intro diet. I am definitely looking for advice on the hard choices we have to make, so thank you!
