As far as I can tell, I have a typical moderate form of rosacea, on all the

typical places on my face: nose, cheeks, chin. Every once in a while my

forehead. Some pustules, a bunch of broken capillaries, sporadic red

blemishes, occasional flushing. Annoying skin sensitivity/surface dryness

(along with T-zone oiliness).

I used several versions of prescription steroid creams for about 20 years

for perioral dermatitis....stupid derm never bothering to mention that

that's a big no-no. And the dermatitis probably was gone looooong before I

was diagnosed with rosacea by a young derm who about had a cow when he

learned about the long-term steroid prescribing (by someone else in his

office). I used the cream almost exclusively around my mouth, on my chin,

very little on my lower cheeks/jaw area. Never on/around my nose.

Anybody that has had steroid induced rosacea, what course of treatment did you

pursue, for how long, and how effective was it? Does everybody have permanent

skin damage from the steroid rosacea or do some people go back to having

" normal " skin? For those that used Protopic, what kind of dosing regimen did

you use and for how long? I was just diagnosed with rosacea a week ago....been

using desonide on an increasing basis in the past year, and am searching for

what my options are. My dermatologist prescribed oral erythromycin, topical

metrocream, and 2 1/2 percent hydrocortisone, and I don't want to use a topical

steroid any longer whatsoever....will be getting a second opinion as soon as I

can. I'd like to hear your two cents, if you've already been down this road,

please! thanks, Theresa

Hi Theresa,

hopefully you will get some good first hand information from the group.

There have been some positive responses from people about protopic, that

hopefully you will get to see.

I have included 6 messages about steroids in the list highlights (really I

should have more), thought I'd mention them to you

Dr. Sy http://groups.yahoo.com/message/rosacea-support/22980

Dr. Nase http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/2084.html

Dr. Sy http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/2885.html

Dr. Sy http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/2886.html

Dr. Nase http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/2096.html

You are well advised to get off the steroids. It can take time to recover

from the rebound, but your rosacea can never get better - and has to

reverse some of the thinning or other problems that prolonged usage can

cause.

I was prescribed cortisone by my derm years ago, luckily for me I just

didn't like it, it made my face really sweat and seemed to have such a

short benefit period.

There are some notes about steriods in the book by Dr. Nase - he gives

very guarded permission to use them, if for a short period, low strength

and you can trust yourself to taper off.

cheers,

davidp.
