Elavil is an antidepresant.

It has been used some, to see if it might help reduce pain for things like

Fibromyalgia.

But, it was never that good for that, either--and that is not as painful as

pancreatitis gets!!! [i know from experience].

It sounds, IMHO, like the Dr. is trying anything he can think of to try to

reduce pain levels.

LIKELY, it still needs to be used in conjuction with narcotic pain killers,

but maybe he hopes it might reduce the amounts of norcotics needed. When I

used to work hospice, it was found that narcotic pain meds could be reduced,

thereby reducing bad side effects of those, by pairing the narcotics with

non-steroidal antiinflammatory pain killers, like ibuprofen or acetomenophen.

Sometimes other meds, like scopalomine, or other meds, depending on the

persons individual needs.

Elavil works on seratonin levels in the brain, and for some people, has some

beneficial effects on their pain levels.

But not that often, nor for that many people, and not usually for severe

pain....but they keep trying it anyhow.

And yeah, I think too many Dr's have their common sense excised during the

graduation ceremony from med school--something about that fool tassel!! LOL!

Blessed Be,

Connie
