So, it's nearly impossible to get a pure oat (McCann's is not safe enough, some of their batches have tested above the safe level). But, even when pure, it causes some celiacs to react anyway. So, to be safe, I like to say that oats are part of the gluten family of grains. It seems that that is becoming more and more common all around. Guest guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Share Posted February 1, 2006 Recent research shows that oats (in and of themselves) are gluten free, but the problem comes in with crop rotation and processing in plants along with gluten containing grains. There are a few brands of oats that are grown in non-rotated fields that are processed in a plant that only processes oats. Those are considered to be gluten free. You'll have to search the internet for the brand names and as a reminder for the new folks, oats are NOT allowed on SCD. The quoted info appears on the Internet however it does NOT comply with SCD guidelines as starch is an issue as well as Gluten. So no matter what this blurb states, I as a celiec would not use oats. An adverse reaction does not always occur immediately either. Oats are NOT on SCD. It is emphatically atated on page 67, edition 10 of BTVC.
