Lara and Tricia - I have been reading your posts about the Atkins diet with

interest. Quite a while ago I talked with Fanney about all the weight she

lost with it so I have been considering it myself.

But, I find it hard to reconcile the concern that with all the meat it

requires, doesn't your cholestorol skyrocket? Mine is already high and I am

about to go on Lipitor. Can it be healthy to go without fruit? I've read his

book in the past and cannot remember all the scientifc rationale for the good

things this diet does.

What are your opinions about the health risks? Thanks. from CT

,

I was concerned about the cholesterol and level of fat in this diet.

However, I talked it over with my physician and he said I would be okay and

that I could possibly loose up to 25 pounds in one week. I miss the fillers,

but learned today that salads help that a lot. I really have not eaten

healthy in many years so I was not used to eating fruits and vegetables. I

was a meat and potatoes women. So this diet is perfect for me. I do miss

them tatters though.

First of all, I recommend re-reading the book to familiarize yourself

with his plan again. It's important to follow his guidelines, and then

there won't be any health risks. It's important to drink lots of water,

take the vitamins and minerals, and please, DO eat some veggies and

fruits. There is a list of low-carb fruits and veggies you can eat. If

you eat these you will be less likely to get bored, and of course, they

are good for you! He addresses the cholesterol issue in his book(s), and

says that many patients have had their cholesterol go down after being

on Atkins. I don't know if mine went down or not, but I did have it

checked after I was eating that way for about 4 months, and my

cholesterol levels were perfectly fine.
