Guest guest
Hi there, after a long time I speak up again. (Thanks Torsten for reminding me about this list... I've had it on nomail forever because of my crazy nutso life.) My son (no CF) had a bumpy rash around that same age that turned out to be pityriasis rosea (a cold virus that remains dormant and comes back as a rash). He has had bad skin (eczema) ever since but nothing major. Our pediatrician told me at the time that a child can get sick from someone else with shingles or chicken pox, but they would not get shingles, but rather, chicken pox. Perhaps popular opinion among pedis has changed since then. I have no idea how it might affect his CF other than possibly opening him up for further viral infections? Becky mom of Ricky (almost 7) with CF and Andy (4.5) no CF CF and possible shingles? Hey we just got back from PJ's 6 month well baby. Everything looks good except he has a really bumpy rash on his shoulder. It JUST appeared today, so the doc said it could be a staph infection? or possible shingles. So he gave us some ointment to put on it and to keep an eye on it. If it spreads or gets worse to call him. Anyone have any expierence with this? Also does anyone know how on earth a 6 month old who has never had chicken poxs before get this?? How will it affect his CF? Any info would be great. Jen A. mom to 4, Yolo 2 1/2 and Phynix 6 months all w/cf.
Guest guest
Hi Becky, thanks for rejoining the list! It has changed quite a lot since you've been here the last time. Hundreds of new parents and quite a few from sunny California too. Hope that Ricky gets out of the club in time for his birthday. Peace Torsten > Hi there, after a long time I speak up again. Guest guest
Jen, A person cannot develop shingles (herpes zoster) before first having chicken pox (varicella zoster). The only scenario would be if you contracted chicken pox while pregnant. Phynix would then be exposed in utero, and of course no one would see it. Later, he could present with shingles. Did you have chicken pox while pregnant with Phynix? Even if you had chicken pox has a child, there are some rare cases where a person who had *very mild* chicken pox *can* get chicken pox a second time. But generally, once you have chicken pox you don't get it again; it just lies dormant in your body. It is only when your immune system is weak that the chicken pox virus rears up and becomes the shingles virus. Most people who get shingles only have one outbreak in their lifetimes, but those that are immune compromised can have more than one outbreak. Someone posted that their 13-year old had shingles; I've read about other children and teens having it, but again this is rare (bet that 13-year old feels not-so-special). I know adults who have had outbreaks of shingles, but I would seriously question a shingles diagnosis in a six-month old who has not yet had a confirmed case of chicken pox. Your doctor should do an antibody test on Phynix to rule out shingles, and I'm wondering why he didn't do this especially because you have other children at home. Have you, your husband and other children already had chicken pox? For those who haven't had chicken pox -- and if Phynix really *does* have shingles -- then Phynix is exposing everyone to *chicken pox* (*not* shingles). (Confusing, isn't it?) The doctor's diagnosis is also suspicious because a shingles outbreak follows nerve pathways; the virus lies dormant in nerve cells near the spine, so an outbreak is mainly seen like a belt around the midsection. Adults I know that were diagnosed with shingles all said they felt truly awful, fever and lots of pain (one woman I worked with broke out on her trunk, all around the midsection front and back, and down one side of her face, was vomiting and ran a fever for days). You noted that the rash is on Phynix's shoulder, which isn't a commonly affected area for shingles, but then again... uncommon things can happen to anyone but this is still why I'd demand an antibody test if the doctor insists its shingles. I would also question whether its a localized staph infection on the shoulder, unless Phynix had a cut or sore at that site that allowed staph to take hold in that area. Was Phynix recently on an antibiotic? It's not uncommon for a rash or hives to occur while on an antibiotic or even days after finishing the antibiotic (this happened to my daughter and to the son of a friend three days after they finished amoxicillian). My son and I both get weird patchy rashes on Bactrim, so doctors won't prescribe it for us anymore. Also, though it's an uncommon site to start the rash, Phynix may have exzema. You might want to pay attention to his essential fatty acid levels; if these are too low (as they are in people with CF) then you might consider getting omega-3's into him, especially the omega-3 DHA. I recently read a study that in males with CF, they have lower DHA than females with CF, or don't convert it as well... something like that. But we already know people with CF are just overall way too low in the omega-3 essential fatty acid DHA, and this causes many problems. Btw: my son's pediatrician saw a case of neonatal chicken pox; he said it's very rare. He said because there's a 10 to 14-day incubation period this meant the baby was exposed while still in utero because the baby showed up with chicken pox at age 7 days. Thinking of you and hope you find an answer soon. Maybe Phynix doesn't get along well with whatever soap or clothing detergent you're using? And sometimes scabies looks like a rash... Guest guest
Sounds like it could be chickenpox, too. And don't let 'em tell you they can't get it after having the immunization...not true! Triana got 'em after having the shot. (Of course, that's just genetics...I had them twice, too...a really bad case when I was 2, and a super-duper bad case when I was 17.) Doc said the fact that I had them twice probably had something to do with her getting them twice. (My doc had told me that 1 in 10 people's immune systems just sort of " forget " they've had them.) Of course, it could just be a simple rash. Shanna mom of Triana, age 2 wcf CF and possible shingles? Hey we just got back from PJ's 6 month well baby.
