After completing the intro diet, is there > a strategy we should use for reintroducing these? What symptoms does your son have now: behavioural, bowel, rashes...? Many have found that once they cut out SCD illegals (flour, sugar, rice etc.) that they don't react to foods as they did when these irritants (SCD illegals) were part of their diet. When ready to give them a try introduce one at a time, start with small amounts and watch for any reactions. > 3. I have read where butter can be used in SCD. Is it a particular type of butter? Casein was a high reactive food for him with the IgG testing. If not comfortable with using butter yet, you could use ghee, coconut oil or oil instead. There are many dairy free recipes at http://www.pecanbread.com/recipes.html > 4. I read where garlic is legal, but also that it contains FOS and > inunin, which I thought were illegal. Yes, garlic is legal and it does contain FOS and inulin (as do onions, artichokes, asparagus etc.). The garlic is legal because the inulin & FOS are in their natural forms. Same way that table sugar is SCD illegal but beets which contain sucrose are legal. None of these foods are on the intro diet and should be added in gradually, while watching for any reaction. Guest guest
> > 1. Does SCD have a track record for improving ADHD symptoms, focus and > concentration in particular? Hi, Bill, Welcome! I began the diet with my foster child, BJ, about 9 months ago. He is diagnosed with Fragile X, with some autistic tendencies - he just turned 9, but functions much, much lower. Fragile X has ADHD as an almost given in boys, and BJ had ADHHHHHD when he first arrived 15 months ago. After getting a baseline behavior with no meds, we began trying some, but then he was diagnosed with bi-polar. He was put on depakote for that, and it seemed to help, and although I was begging for something to slow him down, the dr wouldn't prescribe anything. I got permission from the SW to consult with a nutritionist, who introduced us to SCD. He began to do very well, and actually slowed down somewhat, to the point that the mood swings practically disappeared and I refused all other meds. We weaned him off the depakote - I saw the mood swings with food (crying when I tried the Spectrum Canola Mayo, and extreme mania when he snuck a taste of my cow's yogurt). BJ has done phenominally on this diet! His impulsiveness has decreased immensely. He can sit and watch his favorite DVDs and the food network. He is making wonderful strides in his classroom - he's talking up a storm, his vocab is increasing, he understands much that is spoken to him. His SW who only sees him once a month always says how much he's improved from month to month. Last month he even initiated a game with her!! There is much hope..... > 3. The protocol I was given by the nutritionist said to use coconut oil instead of butter. I find food sticks less in the pans when I cook with it, and nobody else in the house has complained about the taste. Sue B
Guest guest
Hi--I think I can answer the butter question. Since butter is all fat, it does not contain any protein--that's why it doesn't have casein. We were told this by GI docs when my son was a baby, and couldn't break down casein--they said he could still have butter. Hope this helps, > >Reply-To: pecanbread >To: pecanbread >Subject: Ready or not, here we come >Date: Sat, 18 Feb 2006 02:42:14 -0000 > >Hi folks, > >After nearly 2 years on the GFCF diet (with moderate success), we are >planning to begin SCD as soon as possible.
