Guest guest
I think that at her age you should be nursing her before you give her babyfood. In other words, nurse as much as she wants to first, then sit her in the high chair with food. This way the food isn't replacing the valuable nursing sessions. I posted a list a few days ago with some high-calorie foods we used early on, like avocado slices, oatmeal with flax seed oil added, and cheese or whole milk yogurt (we also do homemade yogurt made from half and half). I know you're supposed to stay away from dairy until one year, but both my kids, who don't tolerate cow's milk, did fine with it in yogurt form. Cheese also, being an aged form of milk, doesn't cause as many problems as cow's milk itself. You could try a very small amount of yogurt and watch for any reaction over the next few days, to see if she will tolerate it. You could mix the scandishakes with rice milk. We like to add flax seed oil or olive oil to whatever eats that it " works " in. How is she doing on the charts? When was she diagnosed? My son was nursing mostly, ate very few solids, at diagnosis at 10 months. He was also tiny -- below the 5th percentile for height and weight. He still nursed before eating and breastmilk comprised 80-90% of his diet until he was 15 or 16 months old, and he gained at a rate that we were happy with. He's now 26 months and has passed the 50th percentile! :-) Good luck! I am sure others will have some great calorie suggestions. And congratulations on continuing to nurse your daughter through all this. )O( mama to , 2yo, wCF and alpha-1 and to , 4 yo, w/alpha-1 but no CF babyfood and scandishake questions Hi everyone, I have an 8 month old daughter that I am trying to make gain weight. She drinks mostly breastmilk and I also give her babyfood mixed with cereal. I asked her dietician and the only thing she recomended doing was adding formula to the breastmilk and to continue to add cereal to her babyfood. I think Kennedy is actually losing out on fat and calories by eating babyfood. A jar of babyfood has about 25 calories and 0 or 1 grams of fat. 1/2 serving of baby cereal has 30 calories and 1/4 of a gram of fat. She eats this in place of one breastfeeding session. I am assuming she drinks ATLEAST 5 ounces of breatmilk, which would be 100 calories. Do you see what I am saying? Is she to young for me to be adding other things to her babyfood....like butter?? Can someone give me some ideas of things to add to babyfood either now or in the next few months to add fat and calories? Also, we just switched enzymes. She used to take plain ultrase, and would get them for free along with ADEK's. Now she is taking ultrase MT12's and they sent us free scandishakes. I am assuming that she is too young to drink these as they are suppose to be mixed with milk. Is there something else I can mix the scandishakes with or should I wait until she starts drinking regular milk? Thank you in advance for any replies...... Guest guest
, Kennedy was diagnosed at 3 months of age. At that time she was at 5% for weight. She made it up to the 50th percentile and at her clinic visit 2 weeks ago fell back down to about 25%. We are not sure why she fell off the growth curve. She has been sick alot lately. She went from having a cold for 3 weeks to having pneunomia and now she has had another cold for about a week now. The doc also upped her enzymes from 2 plain ultrase capsules to 1 ultrase MT12. He did this because her BMs were large and frequent, not necessarily because they were greasy. As for the breastfeeding, I think that it is very important and have no intention of stoping. Unfortunately, I cannot keep up with her. She eats every 2 hours. I was hoping to introduce a little more food to her diet to give myself a break. I think the avocados are an excellent idea. I will have to mash them up because she is not ready for slices or pieces of anything. What exactly is flax seed oil and where can I buy some?? Thanks for your input! Guest guest
My son is 5 and a half months, and loves baby food. We were told by our dietician, to add 1 tsp melted butter to each jar of food, and we were also told this be my first son's dietician, 4 years ago. I have been doing it a week, and see no change in his stool. He seems to be handling it great, as did my first son. I also add baby cereal to the food. I add butter to cereal, fruit, and veggies. And will add to meat in a few months, when we start meat. Melinda - sons 4 and 5.5 months, both wcf babyfood and scandishake questions Hi everyone, I have an 8 month old daughter that I am trying to make gain weight. Guest guest
I agree with . Get in as much breastmilk as possible. I will share a suggestion that was made to me when Mycah was a baby. Torsten, you may want to turn your head while I say this. Mash the avocado and mix it with breastmilk. The perfect CF baby food! (should we try and market this and donate the proceeds?) Guest guest
Being sick always seems to interfere with growth for Jake. It sounds like the enzyme increase will probably also help. Flax seed oil is just that -- oil from flax seeds. It is available at health food stores. It's pretty expensive, and I started using it because it contains the plant forms of omega-3s, alpha-linolenic acid, or LNA. I guess there is some question as to whether the body can actually convert LNA to DHA...so I'm not sure 100% if there is benefit. We still use it because it works for us. I save money by using it only with breakfast foods and then use olive oil for other times. )O( mama to , 2yo, wCF and alpha-1 and to , 4 yo, w/alpha-1 but no CF RE: babyfood and scandishake questions , Kennedy was diagnosed at 3 months of age. Guest guest
Hve you tried giving her table food? When Yolo was 9 months old I was finally able to quit b/fing her. She went from me to a sippy cup drinking peptamin JR. Anyways that's neither here nor there. Maybe see if she likes actual mashed potatoes, then add butter and all that stuff to it. Mashed up mac & cheese was a favorite of hers, you can use expressed milk to thin it out. SOrry I'm not much help. These are little things that I found worked for us. Guest guest
Hi Holly, Sorry I'm running a bit late answering mail, but life at our place has been somewhat crazy recently..... I was definitely adding butter to Sian's baby food by 8 months. I was also feeding her cooked milk products (homemade yoghurt made with scalded milk etc.) Now, I also made my own baby food, so that was an easy way to add fat. Sian was eating meat at about 7 months, so she was getting a fair amount of fat that way. (Homemade chicken stock without the fat taken off, pureed with roasted meat and vegetables, with lots of extra salt. Happy CF baby!) Hope that helps. Mum to Cate 10yrs wocf and Sian 6yrs wcf, asthma, GERD and ADD? Canberra Australia
