Liane,

You might try taking the enzymes whenever you eat ANYTHING

with any fat. That's what my GI recommended that I do, and it

seems to work pretty well for me. He also suggested that I take

an extra enzyme (I normally take 2 with every meal or snack, so

this would be 3) if I am eating an especially higher fat content of

meal. He said this was handy especially when I have to eat out

and I'm not sure of the fat content of restaurant food. The

enzymes I take are high in lipase level, 20,000 units with each

one, so that means I'm getting 40,0000-60,000 units each time.

I don't know if this will make a difference, but I know that taking

them with every meal really helps me.

Hello newma18@...,

In reference to your comment:

è I am pretty new to this group but it kind of scares me. I have had to go to

the ER three times with acute pancreatitis.

Dear Myrna,

Welcome to the PAI. I am sorry to hear that you have had three attacks of

acute pancreatitis. Although the doctor doesn't think this was caused by

what you eat, I am sure a lot of the members will tell you to reduce your fat

intake. Most follow a low fat diet with no more than 20 grams of fat daily

and eat smaller meals and portions more frequently throughout the day. We do

have a database of recipes, link resources, and a FAQ page at our home

website: http://www.pancassociation.org.

Many members receive each email, but some get a daily digest so sometimes you

receive replies right away and sometimes not. Please feel free to post your

questions or just share what is happening. You didn't mention if your

amylase came down (8000 is pretty high), but it is good your doctor checked

your medication. Any time you have an acute attack it takes awhile for your

body to recover. Be sure to take it easy and get plenty of rest.

Hope you are having a pain-free day,

I am pretty new to this group but it kind of scares me.

I have had to go to the ER three times with acute pancreatitis. The last

time my amylase were 8000. I had to have a syst drained and was in the

hospital for three months. What scares me is, reading what many say about

there condition it makes me worry that I am only kidding myself if I do not

think I will have another attack and have to go back to the ER, Three

doctors have told me that what I ate did not cause the attack. They kind of

think it was my blood pressure med. which has been changed.

Right now I am pretty pain free accept low enegry and pain from the surgery

to drain the syst.

Did many of you start out like I have???

I am also on digestive enzymes. I take three with meals and am suppose to

take three with snacks but I do not usually with snacks because that seems

like too many.

I would like any information I could get to understand what is in my future.

I am sure my pancreas has been damaged but would like to think I am over

this.

Sincerely

Myrna

Yes my amylase came down to under 100 I believe. At first they came down

and then I was given just a little to eat and they jumped back up to 500 so

I was taken back off all food and was just on IV's for another about two

months. I would like to understand a little more what happens to any one who

does not eat the low fat diet? Do they really have problems right away or

what happens. I need to understand a little more so I will want to go to the

low fat diet. So far Ice cream seems to help my stomach and I have eaten a

little baccon but not a lot and it doesn't seem to affect me and I am just

wondering if it will but it is hard where my doctor says food did not cause

my attack. I really do not want more in the future, if I can help it.

About how long has it taken anyone after an acute attack and surgery to get

there strength back? and feel like they did before?

Sincerely

Myrna

Myrna,

Your doctors were right, food is not the cause of your attacks, but

unfortunately once the pancreas has been damaged it starts to

lose it's ability to process fats in the usual manner. That is why

the low fat diet is recommended for people with chronic

pancreatitis. It may be that you will not develop this chronic

condition and a low fat diet wouldn't be necessary. But the fact

that the doctor has already prescribed enzyme supplements for

you leads me to believe that they saw some pancreatic damage

and insufficiency, thus a low fat regimen would help to ease any

further stress on the pancreas while consuming food.

Here are two very good links that may answer many of your

questions. I would have pasted them in, but they are long and

contain a lot of useful information. I hope this helps.

First of all, I would like to thanks everybody who replied my

question.

Some comments:

Heidi,

My doc said that if I use oral enzymes everyday, my pancreas

will become lazy.

I don´t know if it´s true, but in next appt I will talk to him about

this again.

and ,

Yes, when my levels are high, I feel that I´m not OK, back pain,

stomach pain, gases, heartburn, indigestion sometimes dizziness,

nausea or diahrrea.

As my dx lasted more than a year to be done, I think that my levels

will not be sky high no more.

My first one was 166, normal for that lab was till 85.

My doc said that now I´m chronic, and probably is working 70%,

at normal days.

I also think that it´s better stay away from ER, but my doc said to

call him, when I´m feeling bad, so he can put me on the hospital,

but I refuse.

,

Sometimes I can not controll the fat contents of my meals.

Specially when I eat on restaurant or party out of my home.

My parents use to cook without so much fat when I go to see them.

By the way, I also like to enjoy the life, taking care of myself, of

course. Eat pizza with my hubby, it´s one of the pleasure or sin that

I do, not always. I don´t feel guilty.

About alcool, I never drunk or drink, I dislike.

All the best,

Liane
