Guest guest
Most moisturisers contain some sort of humectant. If not glycerin it's often propylene glycol, butylene glycol, sorbitol. I'm amazed that even a rosacean would react to glycerin - are you sure it's not something else??? Glycerin at high levels (say, over 20%) might cause some drying of the skin, but at its normal levels of 2 - 10% glycerin is usually mild and soothing. But then there's always someone sensitive to any material. Barry Hunt glycerin Can anyone recommend a cleanser and/or moisturizer without glycerin? How about a sunscreen? I burn and peel when I use any product that contains glycerin... Thanks
Guest guest
I'm very sensitive to glycerin. It elicits an immediately visible red reaction from my entire face (but not flaming like octyl methocycinnamate makes me). I'm kinda new to products, reactions, and rosacea but here goes with what I know for glycerin-free products... sunscreen: Clinique Super City Block 25. Got that recommendation off this list. (thank you list). Active ingredient is titanium dioxide. I emailed them for the ingredient list (which I then deleted, sorry). I also am working on my hat collection. I keep hats in my car, by the door, on my chairs. Be sure to look for wide brims. I am very interested in a higher SPF sunscreen that doesn't contain Octyl Methoxycinnamate... cleanser: I switch between Zum Bar (lavender/mint) which is a " natural " product that contains goats milk. I can't remember the oil that it has in it but you can email them and ask for complete ingredients and it's listed on the product (I think there are 3 ingredients or something really small). I find it to be very cooling and refreshing but it dries my face in winter. I buy it at my local healthfood store but you can also buy it online (maybe have to pay shipping though). I really like this product; It worked very well for me in the summer. http://www.indigowild.com/zumbars.cfm I also am experimenting with Clairol Herbal Essences Foaming Face Wash (peach colored) (to be a nondrying cleanser). I bought a sample bottle at a local store (owned in USA by Kroger..www.kroger.com) in the sample section. I seem to react at my hairline but only sometimes. This product has a ton of ingredients (see end of email), but you can email them also: http://www.herbalessences.com/skincare/face_wash.asp If you can't find a sample product, I would ask the company to send you one. Again though, I switch between the above two products and use the zum bar more often. I also sometimes just wash with lukewarm water. moisturizer: I have not focused on this area yet too much. I use a vitamin E oil (for dry patches that I get when I use zum in winter, sparingly and at night). I bought it from a local health food store. It's called Nature's Gate. It's got grapeseed and calendula oils and the rest of the info has wiped off. I'm not too comfortable with it (maybe it's putting oil on my face?), but it does the job. I'm interested in trying Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, but I haven't done the research on that yet. When I first suspected glycerin, I looked up on about.com for info. It says to look at glycerol, which says: Trihydroxy alcohol, a colorless, viscous liquid derived from soap manufacture as a byproduct, or more recently, synthesized from propylene and sugar. It is used in the manufacture of alkyd resins (esters of glycerol and phthalic anhydride), and similar ester-type resins, esterified synthetic resins, and plasticizers. The term glycerol applies to the pure product; glycerin applies to commercial products containing at least 95% glycerol. I don't know what half of that means but I see the word alcohol in there! Clairol Herbal Essences Foaming Face Wash Long ingredient list (please excuse typos): water, sodium laureth sulfate, disodium laureth sulfocuccinate, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocamide mea, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, white lily (lilum condidum ) extract, comfrey (symphytu officinale) extract, tea tree (melaleuca alternifola) oil, sodium chloride, PEG 120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Benzophenone 4, whew, Fragrance, polyQuaternium 10, Citric Acid, tetrasodium Edta, sodium sulfite, dmdm hydantoin, methylparaben, g&c red #33, D7C orange #4, fd&c yellow # 5. > >To: " rosacea support " rosacea-support > >Subject: glycerin >Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 09:52:16 -0700 > >Can anyone recommend a cleanser and/or moisturizer without glycerin?
