Guest guest
Hello all, I just subscribed to the group, and attempted to check out the archives for information but got the "message" that the "group was temporarily unavailable!" I am an RN in grad school to become a family nurse practitioner with the goal of working among migrants. I live in Augusta, GA and the migrant population closest to me is in the Aiken and Edgefield, SC area, about an hour or so away. I try to use assignments in school to learn more about migrant farmers/workers and so one of my papers this semester will be on their children. It is a growth and development class, and I would like to focus on the development problems encountered by children in this population. Any advice you may provide in the area of pertinent literature would be much appreciated. I would also really like to hear from anyone involved in migrant care in the Augusta, GA area (within 100-150 miles or so). I look forward to learning from all of you. I am attending part time and will not graduate from the Medical College of GA until spring 2005 but have so much to learn and to prepare for! I have basic Spanish language skills and they are rusty and have never actually been able to work among migrants, so everything I know is strictly head knowledge. I hope to be able to do some of my clinical work in migrant care even if I have to go to Statesboro (another fnp program) to do it! There is clinic that does some migrant care in Clearwater, SC that was advertising for a nurse practitioner a few months back, so I hope to be able to arrange clinical time there. I know at one time there was an actual migrant health clinic in ston, SC but was not able to reach anyone for more information when I tried (about two years ago). I came down with Guillain Barre sydrome 18 months ago and that derailed me for awhile, but was able to return to school part time last summer. I am thinking about putting together an independent study to do this summer. I would like to combine my research class requirement with an actual project involving the migrants. I really need some input on this (I have to put a plan together in March). If there was already something in the works locally that I could be part of, that would be great. I am Catholic and would love to work with other Catholics or Christians if that opens any doors. I joined MCN 2 years ago and try to keep up with anything online that I can. Thanks for listening, Deborah
