Guest guest
I just got word from the dr that j's electrolytes are low. I found the drink recipe on line and was wondering how much to give him in a day. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is j having a lot of diarrhea? 2. What type of food is he eating, cooked, raw etc, 3. Which foods: carrots, broccoli etc? The electrolyte mix is good to keep hydrated. But doesn't contain potassium or other minerals so you wouldn't be able to depend on this long term. Some electrolyte recipes on the net suggest a little salt substitute (potassium chloride). If able to tolerate foods bananas are a fantastic source of potassium. The electrolyte mix should be refrigerated and if not used up in a day tossed and made fresh. If dehydrated a litre of the mix/day for an adult is a good start but he should also be under the care of a physician. Guest guest
how old is your child? for children, at the hospitals, the amount of total fluid required in a day if they are not eating is calculated as follows: there are some exceptions and this calculation only accounts for the amount of fluid needed in a 24hour period if a child is not eating or drinking anything and does not replace for extra losses as diarrhea, vomit, fever, or if there is already a % of dehydration, so keep this in mind. it should, however, give you an idea about the normal amount of fluid that your child should be taking if not eating at all. Fluid Replacement: 100ml for each kg for the first 10 kg plus, 50 ml for each kg for the next 10kg plus, 10 ml for each kg extra. for example: if your child is 22kg, 1000ml for the first 10kg + 500ml for the next 10kg + 20ml for the next 2 kg for a total of 1520 ml of fluid in a 24 hour period. Therefore, if he was on iv fluids at a hospital, he would have them running at about 63.5 ml per hour. NOTE THAT THIS CALCULATION DOES NOT ACCOUNT FOR DEHYDRATION. THAT HAS TO BE ADDED AND NEEDS OTHER CALCULATIONS DEPENDING ON THE DEGREE OF DEHYDRATION (usually by the clinical exam). ALSO, IT ASSUMES A BALANCED ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION. If your child already has an electrolyte imbalance (from the lab work) or is having diarrhea that is very frequent or continuous or that you cannot catch up by drinking, you must call your doctor immediately so that he recommends how much to take or if other actions need to be taken. As it was said before, the lytes that you include in your solution are very important and you MUST find a good source for them. I hope this helps. _____________________ > > I just got word from the dr that j's electrolytes are low. I found the > drink recipe on line > and was wondering how much to give him in a day.
