It sounds like you are getting him off to a healthy start. I remember

once having heard of a diet that would induce ketosis in most people -

very high fat - but helps forms of epilepsy. Have you heard of this? take

care, Fay

Infants who aren't eating food just breast fed can be put on the diet

by putting the nursing mom on the diet. Some constituents of food can

pass through the breastmilk (eg. If you have baked beans and breast

feed the baby can be gassy...)

Infants just on formula can have SCD legal formulas.

Since your son is eating solids you could make your own SCD legal baby

food at home. Commercial baby food (even if organic) is not SCD

legal.

Thank you, Fay.

Yes, I have heard of the diet you are thinking of; its the Ketogenic Diet. It's

quite restrictive,

and not often recommended for babies as young as mine. It may be in his future,

however, if

we are unable to control his seizures with medicine, or less restrictive foods,

which is why I

joined this list for more information on the subject! :)

Hi, ,

I had a foster child who was put on the ketogenic diet because of

seizures at the age of about 10, because she had gone into liver

failure and was taken off everything cold turkey. She went from 4

grand mals/day to about 4 grand mals/week, but we ended up putting

her on drugs because she ended up in a residential school. There was

no difference in the amount of seizures between the drugs and the

keto diet. When she got to the new school, I found they were very

interested in health/supplements for the kids, and she was tested and

put on different supplements, and taken off food she was allergic to,

and now only has seizures 2 or 3 times a year. Because of this, when

another child a lot like her (but no seizures) was placed with me I

brought him to the same place. We were told about the diet, and both

he and I started it. (I have celiacs.) We were able to take BJ off

depakote for his bi-polar, and he is only on supplements and diet.

It has made an enormous difference in his life - the social workers

are amazed at his progress in the last 14 months - we have been on

the diet for 8 months.

I would definitely recommend the SCD over the ketogenic diet. You

have to weigh all the food, and the child goes hungry and you can't

give her anything else - even water is restricted. That was one diet

I couldn't even think of doing with a child. We did it for 18

months, but the SCD is much more nutritious. I would do the food

allergy testing. Although they could not implement the SCDiet at the

residential school, just taking away the allergens and supplementing

with the needed vitamins/minerals was enough to change her seizure

status - although she is more medicated than I would prefer, but that

is for behaviors.

Peace,

Sue celiacs SCD 8 months

BJ fragile X SCD 8 months

Patti D. has a child with seizures. She used to be one of the co-

moderators of the group.

She was very active when we were on Lyris (Elaine also participated

on that group). Lyris has a great search engine at

http://lyris.dundee.net/read/search/advanced?forum=elaineschildren

She was also on this group (Yahoo) and you can search through these

files also using the " Search " function at
