I recently got approval from my insurance company for surgery.

However, they only provided it from a participating provider, which

Dr. Rutledge is not. This is a surgeon from UNC who does a

laparoscopic Roux-en-Y. I was counting on my physician to back me up

and insist that Dr. Rutledge's procedure was the best way to go since

she had recommended Dr. Rutledge in the first place. I was surprised

when she recommended I go see the doctor at UNC and see what he has

to say. She knows the physician at UNC and says he is a great

surgeon and she has referred patient's to him before for other

things. I called him (his name is Dr. Ferrell). He talked with me

and told me that he was familiar with Dr. Rutledge's procedure and

does feel that his (Dr. Ferrell's) procedure is the better

procedure. He didn't have time to go into the details on the phone

and I have an appointment set up with him on 6/19. My PCP feels that

as long as there is a surgeon in network who can perform obesity

surgery my insurance will never pay an out of network surgeon

especially since Dr. Rutledge use to be on staff at UNC and left. My

insurance is Generations, which is cofounded by UNC and WakeMed.

Does anyone out there have Generations? Is anyone out there familiar

with the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y and know the disadvantages of this

procedure as compared to Dr. Rutledge's procedure. I am convinced

that Dr. Rutledge's procedure is the way to go but if I can't get

approval I don't want to pass up something that may work. Any

comments on that??

I never said that there was no other surgeries. If you read her post you

would see that she wanted advice because she did not want to have any other

surgery. I HAVE researched all the others and GOD sent me to Dr. Rutledge. I

took her post as saying that she wanted advice on what to do. If she really

only feels comfortable with Dr. R then those were some suggestions. And that

is my 2 cent worth.

Jackie,

I spoke with a doctor today who said that one reason the insurance

companies don't like to pay for obesity surgery is because it is not

a permanent solution. He said the fault is not in the surgery, but

that these patients find a way to consume the calories and usually

put back 2/3 of what they lose. He suggested that I get in touch

with people who have had Dr. R's surgery from when he first started

doing it and see how many have kept the weight off.

Now this doctor was the first to say that he was not a general

surgeon and that he did not know how the two surgeries were different

but that generally Roux-en-Y patients gain their weight back.

People, please don't start a flame over this, This is the MGB list, I would

love to have this surgery, but that may not be possible, I have benn a

member of this list a long time, and have found incredible support here.

Some of the nicest and intelligent people on the planet are here. They way

I look at it is, Dr. Rutledge has a great service, it is saving peoples

lives and giving them back their lives. But if by any chance the insurance

company denies me again I will have WLS. And I know that which ever way I

go I will be supported by the people I know on the list. We all want the

end result, so I sugest that we continue to support each other in that

effort. , if you read this would you be willing to re post

you research on the comparision that you did.

Just one persons opinion
