Guest guest
Hi Bernadine: I suffered from headaches for about 20 years. My youngest daughter, 28, was remembering about how at times she would have to stay home from school when she was 16 or so to take care of me because I would be in bed moaning, room darkened, getting up long enough to vomit, then back to bed. During the past ten years or so the headaches have increased in number but I think lessened in severity. I lived on Excedrin for the past ten years or so. One of my biggest concerns pre-op was that I wouldn't be able to take anything for arthritis and for these awful headaches. I have been off arthritis meds since the day before surgery and have not needed it. I have had only one headache since surgery and it was not as intense as I always experienced three or four days a week prior to surgery. I took Vioxx for it which was a prescription drug Dr. R gave us for pain upon release from the hospital. It went away. They never responded to Vioxx before surgery. Dr. R does not recommend Tylenol because of liver damage problems. But if my headaches return like they were before surgery, I'm afraid I'd have to take Aspirin Free Excedrin anyway..as long as they weren't frequent. Because when I get one of my headaches, it takes over my whole life. It's only been three weeks but the headaches have dimisnished to one in three weeks which has to be an all time record for me! I sure hope it stays this way! Guest guest
Hi, Most of the headaches I got were cafeine and sugar related. Right after surgery I had a few small headaches... maybe withdraw symptoms. Now, I don't really have any. a Bernardine wrote: > > Hi, > > Was wondering if any post-ops out there had a history of headaches or > migraines before surgery and if the heachaches have decreased and how > you're managing heachaches now. Guest guest
Dear Flo, Thanks for sharing! It's very encouraging that you have only had one headache in 3 weeks - that is great! I hope that continues, I'll bet it does. Have you ever tried Imitrex? It is for migraines and works wonderful. If you take it at the onset of the migraine, it stops the pain and avoids all the awful symptoms. I've taken them at work and am able to continue on the job for the rest of the day. I think Imitrex is okay to take after surgery, but I only like to take it for a migraine, not a routine headache. That's when I take Motrin. That's amazing that in 3 weeks you are off arthritis medicines! Has the pain gone away completely or gotten to the point where it is bearable? Thanks again for your help, I always enjoy your posts. Sincerely, Bernardine , TX > > > > Hi, > > > > Was wondering if any post-ops out there had a history of headaches or > > migraines before surgery and if the heachaches have decreased and how > > you're managing heachaches now. Guest guest
Hi a, I'll bet most of the headaches I get are triggered by caffeine and sugar, also. Some of the headaches become pretty intense, only a few become a migraine. Your post and Flo's post have been very encouraging and have helped to relieve my concerns about the post-op period and headaches. Thanks! I can't wait to share your stories with my husband, who sees the amount of Motrin I take. Sincerely, Bernardine > > > > Hi, > > > > Was wondering if any post-ops out there had a history of headaches or > > migraines before surgery and if the heachaches have decreased and how > > you're managing heachaches now. Guest guest
Hi Bernadine: Yes, I tried Imitrex and it worked well. I am off arthritis meds completely because I don't need them. I have no pain at all in my feet or ankles.I do continue to wear the orthotics in my shoes. HOwever, last night I went out for dinner and did not wear them. After dinner walking to the car, I wished I had them in my shoes. So I won't do that again..yet. One day I did have ankle pain after an unusually long time on my feet shopping...most of the day...other than that, I feel like I nver had arthritis and it was the pain that beat me down and made me almost handicapped. I quit shopping, walking and doing nearly everything because I could not stand the aching joints. Now it is gone..just completely gone. If I got no other result from this surgery, I would do it again just for the relief from that pain. I keep expecting to wake up with a horrible headache..and it doesn't happen. This too is a wonderful blessing! Flo Bernardine wrote: > Dear Flo, > Thanks for sharing! It's very encouraging that you have only had one > headache in 3 weeks - that is great!
Guest guest
Bernadine: This reminds me...I took so much Excedrin that it became a bone of contention with my husband. He never said a word about the eating I did...never in our 35-year marriage..but it got to the point where I hid taking Excedin because he would say things every time I took them...like " you taking them again, you'll have no stomach left " ..or why do you constantly take those things...go to the dr " . I heard him tell my daughter that I begin and end every day with Excedrin and take them all day long. I know I did..but I just could not take the headaches. I coulodn't function. And between the headaches and my feet and ankles blown up like a balloon and throbbing, my quality of life was nil. Guest guest
Dr. R will give your a Rx for Vicodin for moderate to severe post-op pain. I did not have to take any of it for post-op pain but it has acetominophen [tylenol] in it so I would infer from that that tylenol is ok. Even at that I think I would use it sparingly. Bill ? for Post-Ops about Headaches > Hi, > > Was wondering if any post-ops out there had a history of headaches or > migraines before surgery and if the heachaches have decreased and how > you're managing heachaches now.
