Subject: [ ] Migrant Worker Transportation and

Cal. Legislation

Hello! Thanks very much to those from OR and CA who responded to my

questions about the migrant stream in OR. I appreciate all your help

in finding workable data for that assignment.

One more question: Does anyone know what kind of data upon which

proponents of 1999/2000 California legislation mandating safety

standards and seat belt use for migrant worker transportation

vehicles relied in convincing the CA Legislature to pass this

landmark act? I'm aware of the news accounts of the horrible

accidents involving migrant farmworkers that served as a catalyst for

the movement behind the legislation. I've searched the CA

legislative history for those bills but haven't found much useful

material there. I've tried to contact Sen. Feinstein and Assemblyman

Florez, but since I'm not in CA, it's difficult to get a response. I

understand that, since they have plenty of state constituents with

questions and requests.

Any suggestions or comments? Thanks again!
