Ya, My sister in law just wants to think that nothing bad could happen to her

perfect family. That is what really piss me off!! You almost want to wish

something could happen to them just to prove her wrong. But I don't wish CF

on anyone. Deb A

Some people are just like this. My older sister off handedly made the

comment the one day that I was probably the only carrier in our family.

I happen to be one of six kids so chances are pretty slim that no one

else got the gene. Her reasoning was that no one else had a kid with CF

so ... I must be the only one with the gene. She is intelligent

(currently working on her PHD in psychology) and she understands the

whole issue with the fact that there must be two genes, one from each

parent for cf to occur. Who am I to try and get her head out of the

clouds, it's been there so long the fog has now stuck between her ears

and she's got a few rusty connections as a result. There are just some

people who live in their own world and no matter what you say or do, you

can't get them to hear common sense. I don't even bother with talking

things out with my sister anymore. It's just not worth it. She's right

about everything.

Okay, here's the science and math teacher weighing in on the logic

side. Yes, mathematically a recessive gene such as this should have

disappeared over the generations, especially when you add in the fact

that 95% of males who HAVE the disease are sterile.

However, there is an underlying belief that being a carrier is a

plus. It must give those of us who carry the gene some advantage over

those who do not carry the gene at all. So far the scientific view is

that we would be more able to fight off cholera or some similar

disease where those that don't have even one of the cf genes would

die. Therefore, we survive to keep making the kids that have both

genes and the disease itself.

On the other issue of family members and not believing it could

happen to them... well, my husband has a brother that could fill up

gig of memory if I tried to list all his problems where belief and

this disease have made him VERY difficult to reach. He's beyond the

clouds, the man must think he talked directly with God, since none of

his 4 kids has cf but one of our 2 does.....

Okay, go back to normal life now. I've thrown in my 2 cents (and I

know that's all it was worth! :)

If the cf gene diminished with

each generation, wouldn't it be GONE by now??
