Guest guest
, That is so incredibly kind of you. My mom or sister will go with me when I go to Vandy. They won't let me go anywhere by myself. It is such a blessing to have them as it keeps my hubby from having to take off work without pay. I had to delete most of my e-mails. I just don't have the energy to go through them all. I hope everyone will forgive me. I'm not trying to ignore everyone. I know many are having problems and pain. Please know you are in my prayers as always. I ended up in the hospital Friday night. It was a night from Hell! I had not been doing great all day Friday but pain med, phenergan, and the new preggie pops for nausea were keeping things tolerable. Well, about 7 p.m., I all of a sudden felt better and had the bright idea that I was hungry. I ate part of a piece of pizza and that was all she wrote! The horrible pain and nausea was full blown. After 45 minutes of no improvement, we went to the ER. Arrived there at 8 p.m. didn't get back to a room til midnight. They had four ambulances and a few very serious walk-ins. Almost all the patients they saw ended up being admitted and some even transferred to a bigger hospital. By the time I got back to a room, I had thrown up a few times in the waiting room bathroom. Most of the docs at my local ER give me med for pain and nausea right away. This one female doc insists on waiting for the labs. Of course, this was the doc that was there Friday! She's really sweet but will not budge on this. Finally at 2 a.m., they got my labs back. She said all enzymes were fine but my blood counts and potassium were very low. She was concerned about a GI bleed. She had to do a rectal and then swore she'd give me pain med. I told her she'd find no stool as I had not gone since the day before and prior to the little bit of pizza had eaten almost nothing Friday. She said it was probably a good sign that I had not had a bm Friday as a GI bleed will often cause diarrhea. Anyway, she did the rectal and I must say was very gentle and apologetic. She found no stool or blood. They gave me reglan and toradal. The reglan helped the nausea instantly but the tordal made me incredibly anxious and ansy for hours. At 4:30 a.m., she came to tell me they were keeping me cause my blood counts were too low. I never even asked how low cause I really didn't even care. I did tell the nurse that my hematocrit, rbc, and wbc are low lots of times and no one ever even pays attention. The nurse said the doc had pulled previous labs and it was lower than normal. Anyway, I thought my pcp was out of town so I told them to call the local surgeon he had referred me to on Thursday if I needed to be admitted. I figured the surgeon had seen me in the hospital before and in his office so at least knew my story. No, they call the local doc that anyone without a pcp gets admitted under. I had never even heard of the guy. They get me to the floor at 4:30 a.m. I ask for something for pain and nausea around 6 a.m. and am told there is no order. I was so exhausted I just went back to sleep. Finally, around 9 a.m. I tell the nurse I really need something for pain and nausea. She tells me there is no order and the doc I'm admitted under will want to see me first. This nurse was the one that refused to give me IV meds once my pcp ordered lortab (for when I thought oral meds would be okay). She seemed real sweet and apologetic about no order so I just decided to ride it out. Finally, my mom called at 11:20 a.m. and I told her the story. She said " your stepdad and I will take care of it " . My mom called at 11:30 and said she had called the hospital's head nurse and told them what was going on. the head nurse looked in the computer and said there was definitely an order for pain and nausea med for me. She assured my mom it would be taken care of. In less than 10 minutes, I had med for pain and nausea. The nurse was sweet as pie and was even in two or three times to see how I was doing. Unfortunately, they must have given me toradal again because I had the horrible anzy feeling again for over 3 hours. ly, it was worse than the pain. The doc shows up about 1 p.m. Real good looking young, but basically an ...! Asks me what I'm doing there. I give him the short version of the acute panc story with episodes of pain/nausea both with and without elevated enzymes. He instantly says, " if the enzymes aren't elevated, it's not the pancreas " . I didn't bother arguing with him cause I didn't really give a shit what he thought. He said they kept me Friday night only because my potassium was down at 2.5 (they told me all my blood counts were low, but whatever) but that my labs looked great so he was sending me home. THANK GOD for that! I asked if he could please just give me something to counteract what the tordal had done and he looked at me as if I'd lost my mind. I said, just maybe some mild valium or something. He said that wasn't 'indicated' and he would only give me meds indicated in my case. He said he would give me a script for a few pills for pain and nausea since he wasn't my regular doc. I told him fine as I was seeing a pain management doc on Tuesday anyway. He gave me a script for 6 lortab 7.5 and 10 phenergan. When I got home I took a clonapin (.5 mg) and an ambien and slept for a few hours to get rid of the horrible feeling the tordal caused. From this point on, I will tell doctors I am SEVERELY allergic to Tordal. I am pretty sure I had it before with the same effect. I just wasn't 100% sure it was toradal. Anxiety is not listed as a side effect but I know it was the Tordal as it happened with both doses and lasted for hours. I've had reglan lots of times. In fact, I was on reglan twice a day for several months with no problems so I know that's not it. Another weird thing was that once they gave me the toradal, I only went to the bathroom two times until after I left the hospital. They were giving me IV fluids at 125 cc an hour and I only peed a total of 200 ccs from 2 a.m til 2 p.m. Very unusual for me. I typically go at least 1000-1600 ccs per 8 hour shift as I usually have to empty my own overflowing speci pan! Another thing is that toradal specifically says it can cause bleeding. Here they were concerned about my blood counts. I am on 4 mg of coumadin a day and they give me a med that can cause bleeding! After I go home, I made the mistake of eating again. I had horrible diarrhea and finally had to take immodium just so I could sleep without having to go to the potty every few minutes! Anyway, that was a hospital trip from hell that I hope to never repeat. I am home now. I slept pretty well last night. I feel washed out. I really think that I must absolutely avoid my local hospital at all cost. I will certainly never allow them to admit me when my pcp is not around. Guest guest
W I'm so sorry to see that you had a horrible trip to your local ER. I hope that you are feeling better and your current meds take care of you until you get to see your pain management doc on tues. Don't you just love the doc that say " it can't be your pancreas, because there is no elevation. " These are the ones that I would like tom kick right squarely in the butt. Anyway take it easy and I hope your flare-up is over for the worst part of it. Take Care, Louie in WV

Guest guest
Re: hospital visit to hell >>> W, I'm so sorry to see that you had a horrible trip to your local ER...Louie>>> Louie I am doing better today. I have been able to eat some and my pain is being pretty well controlled by the pain meds. I am going to go to the hospital Monday and get copies of all my recent labs. I'm also going to see if I can actually get copies of my charts with the nurses' notes, doctor's orders, etc. It just seems odd that my last three hospitalizations have each gotten worse in regard to the nurses giving me my pain med. I want to find out what is at the root of the problem and nip it in the bud. W
