Guest guest
Dear Bear, It must be very hard for you to care for a recuperating wife, and your business, with your own disability. We'll do whatever we can to help you. There appears to be some relationship between birth control pills (the estrogen and hormones) and pancreatitis. There has been much discussion about this on the board, yet no one seems to have an answer for this yet. Perhaps one of the women who are taking them can fill you in. There are also many women who complain that their pancreatic pain is much worse during their menses, so this hormone interaction seems very valid. I am 50 and too old to have personal experience with either, yet I'm sure one of our younger women will reply to your query. As to the low fat diet, it sounds as you are doing this right. My GI recommended no more than 20-25 grams of fat daily, and to eat smaller portions, or snacks, throughout the day on a more frequent basis, other than having three big meals each day. So I do this, and try not to have more than 5 or 6 grams of fat with each mini-meal. I snack on fruits, pretzels, flavored rice cakes, granola bars or other no or low fat munchies. I avoid all fried foods, alcohol, butter, gravies, bakery sweets, etc. I have a whole page of cooking and diet suggestions that I will send you. You may also want to talk with your wife's physicians about prescribing enzyme supplements for her. Most of us take them with all our meals and snacks that contain any fat, and they are very helpful, both for the digestion process and reduction of pain. Is your wife seeing a gastroenterologist for further follow-up treatment? Pancreatitis is a challenging and frequently misunderstood condition, and most PCP's aren't experienced enough to handle the mysteries involved with it. Please keep us posted on your wife's recovery, and let us know if you have any questions. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina hhessgriffeth@...
