YEY!! JIM HOME AFTER PANCREATECTOMY

Hi all!

Jim is home after his pancreatectomy and islet cell tranfer on August

19th. He was discharged yesterday after 21 days. We were talking

with Dr. Sutherland before we left and he truly is a very down to

earth, talented doctor but does in no way act as if he's " superman " --

although he's definetly superman in our eyes!

We flew home last night--Jim is doing really well. He got a bit

tired walking through the Pittsburgh airport after we landed (from

the gate to baggage claim)...I wanted to get the cart that drives you

around but he wanted to walk (a good sign)! His incision is healing

nicely but he still has pain at that incision site. It's getting

better though and they discharged him on oral morphine for the pain.

The pancreatitis pain he had before the surgery is completely gone!

Yee ha!! He was discharged on NPH insulin--he was taking 12 units am

and 8 pm, now it's at 8 am and 8 pm. Only time will tell if he'll

need to continue on some insulin. Even if he does have to, Dr.

Sutherland said he shouldn't be a " brittle " diabetic since he did

have a good bit of islet cells to transfer. (crossing my

fingers)...Jim said there were 2 italian doctors from Rome that Dr.

Sutherland brought in his room the other day. They were here to see

the progress Dr. Sutherland has been making with this surgery! Jim's

only restriction now is not to lift anything heavy (over 30 pounds or

so) for about 3 months. He's been eating smaller meals now and

checks his sugars on his glucometer. We're so glad it's over and now

the healing begins! Anyways he's home and it was a very happy and

emotional reunion with our 3 kids last night!

First let me send my congratulations to both of you for the successful surgery.

Jim, Welcome Home! I sure it must feel good to be home. I'm sure the children

must be thrilled , now that Dad is home. I'm familiar with the Pgh Airport. It

is very large and a lot of walking. Now that you are home Jim, don't over due

it. Just take it easy as it does take time to get over surgery. I so glad to

hear that your pancreatitis pain is gone. The best news your could possibility

get.
