Guest guest
I sincerely apologize if I offended any medical personnel on the board, I certainly was not trying to encourage the use of product for a unintended use. Quite simply, I was just trying to introduce a bit of humor and acknowledge the fact that the products contained the same active ingredients. As I stated before, a Nurse DID inform me that they were the same (however misinformed she might have been), but I did not consider using the Metro-Vaginal for the reasons you mentioned. Having said that, no matter what the medical profession warns, there will be people who use medications for unintended purposes, as the previous poster was suggesting. All you can do give proper warning and hope that they give it proper consideration before attempting its use. Its good that the medically trained on the board speak up when these issues arise, it makes us all think about what we're using a bit more. Guest guest
Just a brief point - while I agree with you about not using products where they are not designed to be used, Metrogel-Vaginal does actually contain water, and is superficially quite similar to the topical product. Barry Hunt Re: Re: Metrogel-Vaginal for face? First of all, these ARE NOT the same. Misinformation by NON-MEDICAL experts on this board is one thing that really steams me. As a nurse, I can offer you the following: METROGEL-VAGINAL is used to treat a strong, fishy odor and a grayish-white, non-irritating discharge which is caused by the overgrowth of bacteria that leads to a bacteria vaginosis. You cannot drink alcohol (or take medications that contain alcohol) while on this form of medication for it can cause severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache AND FLUSHING OF THE FACE. It can also make you severely dizzy and cause lightheadedness. THIS IS FOR INTRAVAGINAL USE ONLY, NOT FOR OPHTHALMIC, DERMAL, OR ORAL USE. METROGEL-TOPICAL is designed to be applied to the face (not used internally as MetroGel-Vaginal is.) It does not have nearly as many side effects as MetroGel-Vaginal does - most are mild, such as dryness of the face and slight stinging. While each medication does contain metronidazole, they are two completely different medications used to treat two completely different conditions. Metrogel-vaginal (which is formulated at pH 4.0)contains metronidazole 0.75, carbomer 934P, edetate disodium, methylparaben, propylparaben glycol and sodium hydroxide. Each applicator full of 5 grams of vaginal gel contains approximately 37.5 mg of metronidazole. It is packaged in five plastic tubes. Metrogel-topical contains metronidazole, USP, at a concentration of 7.5 mg per gram (0.75%) in a gel consisting of purified water, methylparaben, propylparaben, propylene glycol, carbomer 940, sodium hydroxide, and edetate disodium. It is commonly packaged in 45 gram aluminum tube. As you can see, the ingredients are similar but are, in many ways, not the same. The vaginal medication does not contain purified water and the types of carbomer are significantly different. The topical contains propylene glycol, while the vaginal does not. The listing of ingredients also comes in a different order, meaning the amounts of each ingredient could, very well, vary with each product. THESE MEDICATIONS ARE MADE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO TREAT ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CONDITIONS. I'm ashamed for those on this board (as well as your doctors) who are offering an internal vaginal medication as a low cost alternative to proper, studied medication for treating rosacea. --- mineren gfmine@...> wrote: > I was surprised to find out these were the same > products when it was > fist suggested that I had cea, the Nurse > Practitioner had a good > laugh when she looked it up. > > Perhaps you have to make sure that the pecentage of > active ingredient > is the same, .75 I think, and that the base won't > irritate your skin. > > > > > > > Is it OK to use Metrogel-Vaginal on the face? > > It costs about half as much as regular Metrogel, > > and if it works just as well, why not use it? > > > > Thanks, > > White > > > > -- > Please read the list highlights before posting to > the whole group (http://rosacea.ii.net/toc.html). > Your post will be delayed if you don't give a > meaningful subject or trim your reply text.
