I think K has this issue but, I don't know which foods will be left over if I try to go without the phenolic foods? Maybe some No-phenol would be in order here? Instead of taking more foods out of K's diet right now. Doc was against us taking more foods out anyway. Where would I get the no-phenol? Does the new enzyme with isogest from kirkman's have no-phenol qualities and help break down gluten or casein? I ask because K sometimes steals foods from other kids in school and I want to eliminte whatever may be bothering her allergy-wise. Thanks for any help. Guest guest
I would be interested in help from anyone on this issue as well. My daughter, Margeaux (add), seems to have a phenol issue. I am so swamped with all the other aspects of this lifestyle change, that I haven't yet been able to research this topic on my own. Guest guest
Jenn, The enzymes from Houston's will help with what you are looking for. H-NzymePrime is a good all purpose enyzme. Peptizyde targets the gluten and casein. No Fenol will break down the highly phenolic foods. I would definitely go this route versus restricting her diet further, especially since she is just now coming around and trying new foods. Guest guest
On that note, has anyone had a child grow out of phenol sensitivity using just SCD? And, if so, how long did it take? Or, is this something that kids grow out of eventually with age? (just wondering since my brother-in-law seems to have grown out of it without SCD 30 years ago when he hit grade school) Thanks! Guest guest
Hi -- We also follow SCD (8 months) and phenol restriction. In fact, I came back to this site just now after a long time since my last looks for just this reason. It is very hard to get any good guidance on phenols. When we started SCD, our son got very calm, but then when we started reintroducing foods after the " stage 1 " part, he reacted to so many things. We finally figured out that it seemed to be the phenols that he was reacting to. Our son eats a very restricted diet because we also haven't tried the SCD yogurt since he had such a strong casein sensitivity. Basically, he eats a lot of waffles that we make with the pancake recipe from BTVC, one kind of Applegate Farms sliced smoked chicken or turkey from Whole Foods, pears, canteloupe, and occasionally either hard-boiled or scrambled eggs, less occasionally some cooked chicken that the family is eating. We make cookies/muffins as snacks also. Our nutritionist (works with our DAN Dr) is okay with this diet. He could eat all kinds of meats, fish, and vegetables, but he won't touch them. He also refuses other allowable fruits. It is very restrictive, but he's happy with it, and it's EASY. I just make lots of waffles and freeze them, and I have to buy the sliced chicken or turkey about every 3 days because it doesn't have any preservatives. I actually just found another nutritionist who's up on DAN stuff who seems to know a lot about phenols, and we are going to see her next week. (She gave a lecture recently in our area -- we're in White Plains, NY.) I'll let you know if I learn anything really interesting. One of the problems I have is that I can't tell what's up with my son and the salicylates as opposed to the non-salicylate phenols. Our problems seem to come more from bananas, berries, reactions to vitamins and other supplements, etc. What I'm still trying to figure out is whether we should be trying to get rid of honey, cinnamon, oregano supplement, and other things that seem to be high in salicylates but that we use because of SCD restrictions (and yeast with the oregano). But for me, if the answer is " yes, " you need to get rid of these, I'm not sure what to do because there will be nothing left for my kid to eat. Good luck with it. Guest guest
Yes, my kids can eat the highly phenolic foods without enzymes now. To be honest, I cannot pinpoint how long it took. At some point, I was out of No Fenol and let them eat something highly phenolic and there no reaction. The only exception is those really dark red (almost black) frozen cherries. They still act like looneytoons after they eat those without a No Fenol. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/
