Guest guest
My father always did his level best to be as positive as possible. And he was a natural comic. He would answer the telephone,in the old days when even if, as we did, one had a " private " line, we all knew the opera tors were all listening in on us, my father could not resist toying a bit with what was then standard operator language. One operator when he was placing a long distance call, made the fatal mistake of asking him, " And how are you spelling that, sir? " My father objected to her useage of the language, feeling that she should have said, " Will you spell your last name, Sir? " or " How is that spelled, Sir? " He was offended at the notion that he might be " spelling that " differently each day or something along those lines, so he said to her, calmly and quietly, " The precise and exact way I have been spelling it for my entire life! " and hung up! He then placed the call later and the word had gotten around and the next operator questioned him in a manner acceptable to him. He simply spelled " Rojas " for her, and was his usual calm self. My mother was always deeply offended by his manner of explaining things, and his well-known antics in restaurants--which I can speak of another time! Thank you, Christy, for your succinct comment--I was a little worried that some might be offended. Love to you and to all at cfparents, n Rojas
