How was your son before you started the diet? When we started my 13 y.o. (also Crohn's) his symptoms were under control thanks to steroids, so we were advised that we could go a little faster. But who is the " they " ? If you have experienced mentors then do what they say. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask, and you can also write me off list. Kol tuv, Fay (All the best, Fayge) P.S. I've been meaning to ask if anyone knows of any good yahoo e-mail groups for kosher families dealing with SCD (especially with kids). So, I guess I'm asking, but I don't plan on leaving here because this list is one of the best sources of information I've found.

Guest guest
Hello, My name is , I am 17 and have Crohn's also , and have had for a year. I have just started the diet too ( accually on Monday) so I don't have much in the way of advice, at least not so far. But if you have any questions I would be glad to try to help or would be willing to answer any of your son's questions. One question I have was, what medications is he on right now? I am on immuran, prednisone, and a remicade injection every 8 wks. as of right now, because of a flare-up in Nov. Usually I am on Asacol, immuran, and the remicade. Just wondering what another child is being treated with becasue we are looking into a new doctor and other options in the way of treatments.Hope that I can be of some help to you! I just want to encourage you. My 13 y.o. son has Crohn's, and his C reactive protein (a marker for inflammation that my doctor bases a lot on) came down dramatically when he was on the diet. He had a hard time sticking to it, basically because he loves white bread and flour products and this is really tough for him. He's trying it again, and I hope it goes well for both of you! About looking for a new doctor: it's hard to tell what's appropriate for you because there are several factors- - what kind of activity you have - ulcerative, scarring, fistulizing, and I think one more I can't remember - where in your system it's happening, and that can be anywhere from your esophagus down to the very end. I can say this: what doctors like to do is start patients off on steroids and Imuran. It takes a few months for Imuran to build up in the body to therapeutic levels, so the weaning off prednisone is carefully calculate to hopefully work in tandem with it. Doctors have different attitudes to remicade, especially for kids. My dr. wanted to use it preemptively, but others will use it as a last resort. You may be able to come off the remicade pretty quickly. As to the Asacol and Imuran, that you may need long term, but hopefully it's not that big a deal. You would want your Imuran levels checked though, because you don't want to be on an inappropriately high dose. You may know all this already. I'm only mentioning this to show you how other competent doctors operate. My dr. at least is competent, don't know about yours ;-) I'd resisted Imuran at first for my son, but with healthy hygiene habits like hand washing, and taking zinc and appropriate vitamins (Freeda vitamins has an SCD line) hopefully he will avoid the problems Imuran poses. Kudos for being so involved, and take care, Fay
