Guest guest
I found this on allallergy.net and thought it was interesting. Someone who knows they react to beer may also react to the fruits and vegetables listed below. These particular fruits and vegetables are so common a person could be eating them daily and, as a result, be constantly in a reaction cycle. Hives (bumps) and swelling. Sound familiar to anyone? Suzi A case of allergy to beer showing cross-reactivity between lipid transfer proteins. This study demonstrated that lipid transfer protein allergens (LTP) is a relevant allergen in beer. Beer LTP may cross-react with LTP from several other plant-derived foods, e.g., peach peel, carrot, broccoli and apple. This study reports on a 19 year old boy with a history of Oral Allergy Syndrome after eating peaches who presented with several episodes of generalized urticaria (hives, bumps, which can take take many forms) and angioedema (like hives but in the deeper skin layer) approximately 15-20 mins after drinking beer. Not all brands induced urticaria. Investigation showed allergy to a LTP allergen from barley and present in beer.
