Guest guest
Hello all-- We've been doing the SCD now for about two months. My son's condition has improved greatly. We see it here at home, but it was the parent/teacher conference last week that had me singing this diet's praises. It is hard to remember every little blessing that we've seen, but here are a few: the hyperactivity (hand flapping/little dancing) decreased and is virtually gone, the odd little repeating that he did on a regular basis is virtually gone, he no longer requires reinforcers to get his work done at school, he has not been in trouble at school once since we began this diet, he no longer wears a weighted vest at school, he has not run away from Sunday School class once since we started the diet, he only goes to the special needs classroom occasionally (somedays not at all)for a break, whereas he went several times per day prior to starting the diet in order to jump/bounce, his poop no longer smells putrid, and he is very regular. I do still give him a supplement that has an illegal ingredient, but we've weaned way down on it, and fully intend to wean completely off of it. It's amazing, but he has developed a lot of insight into his problems since starting this diet, too--he told me a few weeks ago that he didn't have very many friends--it was hard for him to make friends--he didn't know how; he also asked me if he would have just one teacher (and he named his special needs teacher) in the fall for third grade, or if he'd have two. When I told him two, he asked why he had two teachers and the other kids only had one. I had no idea what to say, but I told him that it was because he sometimes needed breaks--and when he didn't need them anymore, he'd just have one teacher, too. About a month into the diet, he called me into his room and sat me down on his bed. He looked me in the eye and smiled and said, " Let's talk " . This hit me like a ton of bricks--he's been language disordered/autistic for years--it was the first time he'd ever been able to so clearly ask for a " conversation " with me. I almost cried. We discovered along the way some mistakes--like the vanilla had corn syrup in it, the enzymes had rice bran in them, etc., but we feel that we've gotten all the illegals out at this point. It was very difficult at the beginning, and we, too, cried along with him that he couldn't eat the things he wanted (we'd been GF/CF/soy and corn-free for years--but he loved his rice pasta and sweets!), but I'm so glad we stuck to our guns. We still have a long way to go, but this is the first intervention that's (so obviously) ever helped him. Thanks for the support and suggestions over these last two months, and a special thanks for Karyn for recommending the diet to me! and family-- has mild autism/severe gastrointestinal dysfunction
