Guest guest
Remember when we were responding about attendance rewards and discrimination? Well, I have (finally) compiled our opinions. Anyone want the word doc that contains these opinions and suggestions? Write to me and I'll send it. Don't know how useful (if at all) it will be, but it might give someone the ammunition they need to fight what they are up against. -Lenora -- http://www.lenoradegen.com Give a gift of art...Charming renderings of a home or establishment...Original, one-of-a-kind pen & ink or watercolor...Special prices available only until November 29th, 2002 http://www.cfawareness.org ....in memory...in hope...dispelling the darkness...Learn more about Cystic Fibrosis and the special people who cope with it every day
Guest guest
Vondie, My daughter missed almost 2 months of school last year due to stomach problems, which were cf related so the 504 was effective. Talk to the principal but your son is entitled to the 504, they may give you a hard time because it's more work for the school but he is entitled to have it. The 504 helps in a lot of ways...for instance my daughter doesn't have to raise her hand and wait for the teacher to excuse her to use the bathroom, the teachers are all aware of it so they know that she can get up and use the bathroom and/or get a drink or even to cough when she needs to. It also allows them to carry their enzymes/enhalers w/them so they don't have to go to the nurse. The biggest thing is the excused absences, being in the hospital and/or sick a lot is bad enough but when you miss school and can't make it up makes the situation even harder. My school provides an hour of tutoring for each day missed and that hour counts as a day in school so all of her days are made up. Like I said previously ELizabeth missed 2 months of school but it only show 3 absences on her record. Good luck and let me know if you need any help, I can send you a copy of my daughter's 504 guidelines if you'd like. mom to ELizabeth 14 w/cf, Cody 11 wocf, Zoey 3 wocf, Evan 11 wks w/cf

Guest guest
Vondie, I get awful reactions (large bumps, small bumps - it varies) from ALL pain relievers: aspirin, ibuprophen, acetomin-whatever-it-is). I never had it before, but developed it later on. And I never used much to begin with. I am also allergic to penicillin and recently developed and allergy to erithromycin. Regarding the school attendance thing, to be cf-related, it does not have to involve the lungs. It could very well be a digestive-related absence, or a doctor visit. So far, the leading responses are to initiate a 504 with the school and make sure it states that child will not be penalized in any way for absences due to his chronic illness. -Lenora >Ok guys.
