Guest guest
Dear Dr. R., Please try to remember that " the experts " thought that Albert Einstein was mentally retarded with a learning disability when he was still in school. Keep the faith in what you are doing for so many of us who have nowhere else *safe* to turn. The truly great are most often turned upon by their own kind at the height of their greatness, only to be touted as hereos in the end. Guest guest
Dr. Rutledge; I'm angry, but not suprised, at the reactions of your collegues. Just a couple of examples of how non-accepting of new (and better) ideas the medical establishment has been in the past: -1. " As early as 1843, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes advocated handwashing to prevent, " childbed fever. " Holmes was horrified by the prevalence in American hospitals of the fever, which he believed to be an infectious disease passed to pregnant women by the hands of doctors. Holmes's ideas were greeted with disdain by many physicians of his time. " -2. " In the late 1840's, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was an assistant in the maternity wards of a Vienna hospital. There he observed that the mortality rate in a delivery room staffed by medical students was up to three times higher than in a second delivery room staffed by midwives....... He ordered doctors and medical students to wash their hands with a chlorinated solution before examining women in labor. The mortality rate in his maternity wards eventually dropped to less than one percent. " The reaction of the physician community: " Despite the remarkable results, Semmelweis's colleagues greeted his findings with hostility. He eventually resigned his position. Later, he had similar dramatic results with handwashing in another maternity clinic, but to no avail. Ironically Semmelweis died in 1865 of puerperal sepsis, with his views still largely ridiculed. " This seems very odd to read the above, in this age when we who are health care professionals have, " Universal Precautions, " and handwashing drilled into us constantly as the most important methods to prevent infection. But, the point is it eventually was recognised and seen for it's potential somewhere along the line. I guess when I'm trying to say is keep up the good work. You are making differences in peoples lives and health, and thats what a physician is called to do. A parting thought of encouragement: " Illegitimus non Carborundum. " ( " Don't let the bastards grind you down. " ) All my best; Jenn in Vancouver, WA patiently waiting to cross > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > Well here is the report on my presentation at the American Society >for > > Bariatric Surgery meeting. > > ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Dear Dr. R, Thank you for letting us know how things went for you at the conference. I had really hoped that they would be more open minded, but figured they probably wouldn't, knowing the hard-headed stubborn resistance many doctors have to new procedures and ideas. I'm sure you were somewhat prepared for the kind of response you got, but I know that even when you are prepared, that kind of treatment can (at the least) dampen your spirits. But be of good cheer! You are a pioneer, you are an educator of your peers, and you are an angel of hope and help and life for your patients!!! I've told you before how excited my family doctor is about the MGB, and that he wants to come to NC when I have it. He thinks it is wonderful that you have all the information on your web site, and your web site is what led me to you and the MGB. I think very few of us would have known about this life saving procedure without the web site. I really think it is absolute foolishness for them to object to your web site!!! I have researched WLS for quite a while now, and felt as so many others did when we found the web site - that (finally) here was by far and by all measure the best choice for us. After all my study and research, and talking with many post-ops, I know that the MGB is for me! I look forward to having the surgery and starting a new and wonderful part of my life. I look forward to many things, but probably most of all I look forward to being able to do so many things with my 6 children that I can't do now (play, dance, go fun places, etc., etc.). My husband and I even want to adopt more children. The MGB will change my family's life, as well as mine, for the better. So thank you for all you do. I look forward to meeting you. Have a great vacation. If my insurance cooperates, I should be seeing you soon after you return! Sara Schutz
