Hi ... I have BCBS PPO. I am in Illinois, but my husband's employer is

based in Minnesota, so it is BCBS of MN... I'm not sure if that matters,

since all claims are sent to our local office. I have not yet been

approved. I sent my PI form in the end of May, and my packet was sent the

beginning of June. There is no exclusion in our policy for WLS, but it does

require prior approval. I will let you know what happens.

Hi, ...

I have BCBS PPO and had no problem getting approval for the MGB thanks to

the great request letter Dr. R. wrote them. I had approval in about 2

weeks, I believe.

I had a few " issues " to clear up (a cervical polyp was found during my Pap,

I had never had a mammogram, had a bladder infection) boy, I'm a mess, huh?

Also, it has taken me a " month of Sundays " to get folks to " cough up " my

medical records!!!

Anyway, long story short, I am waiting on my Physician's Support letter and

then my 12 steps will be complete.

BCBS said the pre-approval would be valid until my policy renewal date

(which for me is August 1.) I'm gettin' DOWN TO THE WIRE!!! Please pray

for me folks!!! Pray my doc gets that letter done this week like he

promised!!

Anyhow some ever...let me know if I can answer any questions for you, .

I think they approved mine so readily because they've already spent a bloody

fortune on my comobidity issues (gallbladder surgery, hypertension, etc)

See....I TOLD you I'm a MESS!!

Good luck!!!

Carol K.

,

I have BCBS PPO of Texas. If you read your benefit book it will tell you if

it is a covered benefit. If it says that it is just follow all the steps

explicitly in Dr. R's patient manual and you will be on the road. I started

the process March 10th, had Surgery 5/9 and am now 5 weeks post op today and

doing great. At 4 weeks I had lost 20# and 16 inches.

Hi ,

I have BC/BS PPO. I had no trouble with my authorization once they finally

said they received my letter. Debbie sent it from Dr. R's office but they

claimed they never got it. I faxed it to them and called to confirm receipt

and from then it was three weeks to approval.

Be sure to check your actual handbook to ensure that they will PAY for WLS

surgery. Just because you get approval (which basically is their agreement

that it is medically necessary) doesn't mean that your particular policy will

cover the surgery.

The first thing I did before anything else was to read my manual and then to

call the number on my insurance card and ask them exactly what they cover for

weight loss surgery. I took names of everyone I spoke to in case I needed to

refer back to them.

Interestingly, the first person I spoke to was going the next day to talk to

her surgeon for the first time about having WLS! I'd been praying about it

and took that as a sign that I was making the right decision. What are the

odds that of all the customer service reps who could have answered my call

she would be the one? I took it as a " God-incidence " rather than an

" coincidence " !!

If I can help more, let me know!

A word of general advice-- send all documents to ins co's " return receipt

requested. " They will not be able to claim they didn't receive them and you

get a return receipt saying they did!
