Guest guest
I emailed this once before but received no replies. So I am emailing it again. Thanks Dr. Sutherland Can someone who has had the islet cell procedure and had the pancreas removed by Dr, Sutherland please answer this post. What is your personal opinion of Dr. Sutherland. Does he listen to all that you have to say. Does he answer all questions. Does he have a good bedside manner. Does he treat you with respect. Does he truly possess the attitude that he wants to help people or does he act GOD like. I received an email from him yesterday and he told me to call his office and schedule a consultation. I want to do that but before I go spending huge amounts of money I want to know as much about the procedure and him as possible. I recently was going to a GI who was so great in the office when I went for my visits. I swore that he wanted to truly help me. I drove 200 miles one way to go to my appts. Then I had an attack and he convinced me to go to the hospital by him. I made the long horrible trip in terrible pain with the understanding that I was a direct admit when I got there, etc. . . Well, when I finally got there no one knew anything about me. He spoon fed my pain medication and I sat in the hospital for 1 one week never really totally out of pain. His bedside manner was horrible. I don't ever want to go through that again. My current GI who was my original GI 5 years ago said this procedure is bogus and I would be making a big mistake. He said the diabetes could kill me before the pancreatitis would. So please help me to tell me as much about the procedure as you know and as much about Dr. Sutherland as you can. Thanks in advance Ihnow

We began emailing questions to Dr. Sutherland (numerous times) even before Jim's surgery was finally approved. Dr. Sutherland answered ALL of our questions very thoroughly, straight-forward and with the facts. If I can find one of my emails I'll post it so you can see what and how he responded to us. We initially met Dr. Sutherland Aug 16th, the friday before Jim's surgery, in a clinic setting for his H&P. First an assistant of his came in to get some info from Jim. Dr. Sutherland came in like a ball of fire. I mean that in a good way in that he was " lit up " with excitement in his voice and mannerism...he talked to us for a long time making sure he had all of his notes correct on Jim's history (we had sent him all Jim's records beforehand to review)...he examined Jim and proceeded to tell us in detail about the surgery itself...what to expect after the surgery, what organs besides the pancreas he may remove, etc...I mean he was VERY THOROUGH and we were both very impressed with him (and the entire staff at that clinic that first day)! His personality is A+...he seems very genuinely concerned about helping Jim and getting him back to his normal way of life as it was before all of this terrible pain started. In NO WAY does he appear to be GOD-LIKE...he is very easy to talk to, listened attentively to ALL of our concerns and answered all of our questions. He did not seem rushed at all to get out of the room (as we've experienced with some doctors in the past)...We both expressed to each other our impressions of Dr. Sutherland after he left the room and we both felt the same--we knew we were doing the right thing with the right doctor! During the surgery the nurses kept us posted as he even came out to us (my sister was with me) in the middle of the surgery to tell us where they were and that everything was going fine. (It was when they took the pancreas to the lab to extract the islet cells). After the surgery, it was about midnight, he came out to us again in the waiting room and talked with us for a few minutes explaining all he had done and what to expect immediatley. He saw Jim daily in the hospital afterwards. That was my first hand experience to date...I will be joining Jim again shortly as he will be getting discharged soon! I can't say enough about Dr. Sutherland...his patience, caring attitude, wonderful bedside manner, etc. He was everything we expected AND MORE!!! HOPE THIS HELPS! He is the kindest, most caring, most down to earth, no inflated ego doctor I have ever met. I LOVE HIM AND I CAN'T EXPRESS IT STRONGLY ENOUGH HOW WONDERFUL A HUMAN BEING HE REALLY IS. Everyone I know who has been to him just loves him. I loved him so much I kissed him on the cheek. Another woman who's husband is in MN recovering from the pancreatectomy and auto islet cell transplant wrote me privately and said she loves him so much and he is so kind that she hugged him. One cannot help but love him. He is UNLIKE any doctor I have ever met and I have met many. Too many!!! I have met so many jerks. I guess I have explained his personality very well to you. Now for another part of him that you need to know. He is a wonderful doctor. He did the first pancreatectomy and auto islet transplant in 1970 and the woman he did the procedure on is still doing great today. Dr. Sutherland does more whole pancreas transplants than anything. He is the only doctor I would go to for the pancreatectomy and cell transplant. I would never trust anyone else. The hospital in MN is so trained to care for patients who have the surgery also. I had my surgery Dec 8, 2000 and I am completely cured of pancreatitis pain. I can eat what I want. The doctor was able to retrieve 217,000 islets from my pancreas. That is not a whole lot but I am lucky I had that many. Once I had a surgery date I was so afraid of more attacks that would destroy my precious islets. I will answer any more questions you want to ask me but it is getting late and need to go to bed. Ask what you want and I will tell you anything that I know about the surgery I had. I can tell you that I am thrilled that I had the surgery. It has changed my life of torture to a wonderful fulfilled life again. I have other medical problems but they don't have anything to do with the surgery. Take care, Shirley
