The regression is typical at the beginning and called " die off. " It happens as the body detoxes. the bad bacteria put up a last ditch fight for supremacy. Did you start with the " Intro Diet?' What are you feeding your child at present? Don't concern yourself with dairy right now. Carol F.

OK, let's go step by step. usually I summarize The Stages suggested at www.pecanbread.com are optional. They were devised with input from our parents about foods well tolerated at the beginning. In your case they serve to highlight what Bowen is eating that may be impeding progress. ..Green apples would make a healthy adult sick unless you just mean ripe Granny variety. At this point they should be cooked. Peanuts are a legume and could be hard fror Bowen to digest so early in the game. You did not mention following the " Intro Diet. " The only dairy at the beginning would be the option of making the cheesecake allowed on the intro diet with yogurt and the use of the dry curd cottage cheese for same. Dairy is not mandatory and may be tolerated later in the diet. Sure you are stressed out. But if there is a chance of the diet helping it requires compliance and it takes patience and scarifice to deal with all the emotions that come into play as changes are made in an autism family's daily life.. If you are not up to it, you will just remain upset and conflicted. Think long and hard and weigh both sides. if you can get over the hump and put up with the bad stuff that usually happens at the start of this diet, you have a shot at positive changes. No one is forcing you to do SCD and you must not feel you are letting you child or yourself down if you quit. You can always try again when you are feeling stronger. The time we suggest fora fair trial is one month, but in fairness, the diet has to be followed properly. If you need extra help, Pecanbread has authorized counsellors. Carol F. Guest guest
I don't know how your family opperate, whether you have other children, others in the home etc. but this is how we opperate our home. There is our 5 yr old and our 6 yr old, my husband and myself and our 37 yr old son who live in our home. We have embraced SCD to help our son. I have 'cleaned our the house' of any and all illegal foods and I do mean ALL. They are not a temptation to anyone as they are not there. I did all I could to avoid the high illegal ilse in the grocery store. When one of the kids would ask for something that was not allowed I would answer with, " No, we don't eat that right now. " I do all I can to have something baked up at all times. We have an animal protein and 2 veggies at lunch and dinner almost every day with snacks of crack and peels(hard boiled eggs), sliced legal cheese, fruit(generally home made apple sause or bananas). I am not an expert as we have not been doing this for 6 wks yet but I do know that for us even with the extra cooking life is much easier. Our son is now manageable and even fun to be around most of the time. By the way the kids do not ask for illegal things any more in fact they are the ones that will tell me that such and such has 'sugar' in it and is not good for us. Only you can know if this is right for you and your family but for me it has gotten much better. When I first started looking at it and found out that I had to make my own tomatoe sause, catsup, applesause and that they couldn't even have popcorn I was totally overwhelmed. I was dealing with a 5 yr old that was out of control and then I had to add all of this. Somehow the grace of God took over and I started. I then found that I didn't have to do it all in one day and that once some of the things are done up you have them for awhile(I made big batches in my 8 qt crock pot.) I hope some of this will help. Be blessed Sandy M. Whole family SCD for 5 1/2 wks in support of 5 yr old who rages. > > > > > > We have a 4 year old with autism. Just to add to what Carol wrote raisins are also much harder to digest and if not ready for them. I went through something somewhat similar when I put our two NT kids on the diet. Although my sons problems were in the bowel movement department and not behaviourl, things were not getting get better after starting the diet. They improved somewhat (the foul odour cleared up and the frequency slowed down) but he continued to have mushy/diarrhea stools. After rereading the book I put both kids on the intro for a couple of days and then gradually added in foods. I started with cooked peeled fruit and cooked vegetables, cutting out raisins which he *loved* and grapes. Withtin a week or so his stool firmed up. His bloated belly went down even further and he seemed much calmer. It took a while but eventually he was able to eat grapes again (for a while I peeled them because he loved them so - how much do you have to love a child to peel grapes and eventually even raisins and other dried fruit. He had a voracious appetite, so I had to make sure I had lots of whatever he was able to digest on hand. He accepted the change in foods because he *felt* better and because I made sure his belly was full.
