Guest guest
I told the nurse at my derm's office that I want to be off antibiotics by my birthday (July 27th). She said thats fine, but first she wants me to switch from Minocycline (100mgs 2x daily) to Zithromax. (250mgs 3x weekly) I told her about Photoderm and how I cant do anything to make myself flush for a while. She said it shouldnt be a problem. But I've been screwed over by a doctor/derm's complete lack of knowledge way more than once now, and don't wanna just take her word for it. Does anyone here know if switching from Minocycline to Zithromax will cause a flare? I flared real bad when I tried to quit my Minocycline cold-turkey, but I guess the theory is if I switch from one antibiotic to the other I should be ok? Any thoughts? Guest guest
Sorry for replying to my own message but I had a little brain fart for a second. The first line is supposed to say there is no problem with Minocycline together with Photoderm. Sorry. Hopefully that makes more sense. Guest guest
Adam, I wasn't aware that antibiotics impacted on flushing one way or the other. My understanding is that the redness that responds to antibiotics is from inflammation, not vascular flushing. But a flare is different than a flush. Your rosacea may flare with changes in antibiotics if they are having an anti-inflammatory effect, if underlying inflammation is being masked by the present antibiotics. On the other hand, without ongoing inflammation you may enjoy a remission without antibiotics, or perhaps the antibiotics may be doing nothing for you. Adam, I don't have a good sense what's happening with your skin to help advise you in any way, and my confusion is not the kind that more information from you will help. Also, I can't know how much your psychological nature impacts on all this. I wouldn't think that deciding by yourself whether to go on/off antibiotics while still dealing with phototherapy effects is likely to have a good outcome. Will you be twenty, or still a teenager? Guest guest
Thanks. All I remember from the Minocycline withdrawl is that I was very red and broken out and swollen. If the flushing itself is unaffected and its just inflammation making things look and feel worse, then theoretically, switching antibiotics shouldnt have much of a lasting impact on Photoderm. I am switching at the request of my new dermatologist but wanted to decide for myself if this was the right time (even tho the nurse told me it was). I guess I don't have much to lose tho, my skin is a real mess right now anyway Do you (or anyone else on this board) know how long it'll take for the Zithromax to kick in? The derm told me since I'm switching from Minocycline to Zithromax (rather than starting from scratch) it shouldn't take as long.. I have my final Photoderm Treatment set up for May 24th and it'd make me feel better to know the Zithromax would be working by then. I'll be twenty in July, but I am sure I will still act like a teenager Adam Re: Antibiotics - Switching from Minocycline to Zithromax > Adam, I wasn't aware that antibiotics impacted on flushing one way or > the other. The derm told me since I'm switching > from Minocycline to Zithromax (rather than starting from scratch) > it shouldn't take as long... As 007 says, blood levels will take about an hour after the first (loading) dose, but what rosaceans need is " skin level " , which varies from person to person but usually takes weeks -- and likewise, takes weeks to drop to zero once an antibiotic is discontinued. So a person stopping one antibiotic and starting another will experience the " skin level " of the first dropping as the second one rises; if both are effective and their pharmacokinetics are complementary, theoretically there should be no difference. Unfortunately, those are the two unknown variables. But that shouldn't prevent a switch if medically indicated. It's curious to me that your new dermatologist wants to make a change before the phototherapy is complete. Physicians doesn't usually " change horses " in midstream unless medically necessary. > I'll be twenty in July, but I am sure I will still act like a teenager As does everyone, Adam. Happy birthday.
