I found Elaine's comments on our old list.

You know I have written much about D-lactate. It is produced by

fermentation of carbohydrates. We avoid the carbohydrates which

could

result in D-lactate - we don't give the Lactobacillus in our

probiotic much,

if anything, to get the energy to multiply.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If d-lactate is high you stop feeding the bacteria that are

producing it.

They produce it from the carbohydrates a person does not digest and

absorb.

My book talks about it in great detail in the brain connection

chapter.

Bacteria attack the carb molecule and get energy from it so they can

multiply. But because bacteria are poor at taking energy from carb,

they

leave part of the carb molecule which is d-lactate. SCD is geared to

stop

feeding bacteria.

Another mother who participated in this discussion added the

following:

My children have both had high levels of D-Lactate treated with

flagyl. 16 months had never had any probiotic but bifidus at

the time. When I spoke to Dr. Buie he said he was much more

suspicious of bad organisms in the gut than as a result of

probiotics......
