Good luck with your decision and the outcome of whatever you decide. You might want to consider the transplant of Panc. cells to the liver duct before or during the Whipple. A Whipple won't cause the necessity of being diabetic but it could possibly happen. Best wishes, Poncho - GA

How long after surgery till you had return of pain and > Hi ka, I developed Chronic Panc. in 1998 which was then diagnosed in late 1999. I do have chronic Panc. attacks and all that goes with them including the pain. I'm not diabetic at least as of yet. I had a " modified Whipple " that was to remove a cancerous tumor in my small intestine in 1986. They took about a foot of the intestine, the main bile duct, the head of the pancreas, and a couple of blood supplies, part of the stomach, and did two bilroth procedures that gave my pancreas drainage into the small intestine. Monitored closely I didn't have Chemo or Rad therapy and was declared cancer free in 1991. All was fine until the Chronic Panc. began in 1998. One could ask if there was a connection but in reality no one really knows the answer to that. Too much time has past and there are really very few examples or history for the doctors to review. Not many people have chronic Panc. I treat the Panc. with diet, plenty of fluids (like Water), hydrocodein for the pain and immobility. It seems to work for me as best as it can. Recently I have added taking oral pancreatic enzymes and after all is said and done, I think they have a positive effect on me, not perfect but bottom line positive. Currently I'm doing well, I have gained a little weight, and I have an attack about one day in ten, but then it takes me about 3 days to recover. I have had attacks that last 4 hours and other attacks that last three days. One of my major objectives is self treatment and thus to stay out of the ER. Fine folks there but I just would not like to see them. I have the good fortune to respond to treatment well and have a good GI that seems to work well with me. I'm stable as can be, I have more good days than bad, I can get pain relief with a relative minor drug, and the other symptoms are tolerable. Not great but tolerable. Anyway, I hope you have had a good day and that you have a good week. Does WC Ca. mean West Covina California?
