Guest guest
Could someone enlighten me and let me know why Diet Coke affects the outbreaks of R? I drink mostly Diet Sprite and wonder if that if part of my problem. Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Dawn
Guest guest
Dawn, If one of your rosacea triggers is stress, then caffeine may contribute to a flare. The ingestion of caffeine increases the amount of a stress hormone in your body called cortisol. I don't know how much caffeine it takes to have that effect though. 12 ounces of Diet Coke has around 66 mg. of caffeine in it and 12 ounces of Diet Pepsi has around 30. For me, I cannot drink caffeine because I get too wired. I naturally have too much energy. One can of diet pepsi or half a cup of coffee (no milk or sugar or nutrasweet) will make my nose red in no time flat. There might be other things in a diet drink that can cause problems. Someone mentioned here some time ago that Nutrasweet caused flares for her. Also, most diet drinks have citric acid in them. It's pretty high in the ingredient list for some diet drinks. Some people think it can cause flares if you also react to vinegar. They believe that citric acid causes histamine to be overproduced, and that would cause a flare. Unfortunately, there's no test for this phenomenon, and, according to the National Institutes of Health, it is separate from a food allergy. Some people believe that since some citric acid is produced from corn, a corn allergy could be triggered. There is a blood test to check for food allergies called the RAST (sorry, i don't know what it stands for). It's not a test you can draw solid conclusions from since it can give false positives and false negatives. However, it is a good test to take if you suspect you do have food allergies, since they can trigger rosacea flares in some people. I don't have trouble with diet Sprite or diet 7up myself, but I try not to drink sodas because I don't think they are very healthy. I hope that helps!
