How much probiotic? With yogurt?

My daughter has been on the SCD diet for about 8 months and had an OAT

test done recently and the report came back that she had high HPHPA

which supposedly means she has high clostridia. The lab recommended

supplementing her with 20 billion cells per day of Lactobacillus

acidophilus GG and recommended Culturelle. (we had already been giving

her 40 billion cells, 2 tablets/day, of Pro-bio Denfense). I read

where Elaine suggested only 3 billion cells/day. I have 2 questions:

1) Is it harmful to give my daughter 20-40 bilion cells/day? 2) If I

am giving her yogurt (1/2 cup) on most days, do I even need to also

give her a probiotic? Thank you, Jill

Culturelle is illegal, but the use of SCD homemade yogurt and a legal probiotic

will supply

her needs. SCdophilus is legal.

Probio defense contains bifidum bacteria which have been noted to

overgrow and cause their own trouble.

1. Elaine didn't like supplying large numbers from probiotics. She

suggested only a maximum of 3 billion/day from a probiotic source.

Probiotics are not a whole food source.

The yogurt is a different story though - She said up to two cups/day

for children woud be fine amounts. Since there is approximately

3 billion CFU's/mL, 1 cup of yogurt would have about 750 billion

CFU's/mL. To get 20-40 billion/day you'd need between 1 teaspoon to

1 tablespoon of 24 hr yogurt.

The yogurt contains enzymes, the bacteria are encapsulated (are

protected and will travel further in the body), contains minerals etc.

*But* if you haven't been using yogurt go slow - start with only 1/4 -

1/8 tsp. Since (1.) the numbers of good bacteria are so high it can

cause die off, and (2.) since it travels further in the digestive

tract it can cause more die off.

2. If you are using yogurt you probably don't need to take a probiotic

but can if you want for convenience etc.

If she is taking antibiotics to treat the Clostridia make sure that

you take the yogurt away from the antibiotic dose because the antib

will kill the bacteria. Also taking the yogurt a number of times

throughout the day would also likely be beneficial (constantly

fighting the overgrowth)

A probiotic that would be helpful against Clostridia is Saccharomyces

boulardii. It has been found to be very helpful in getting Clostridia

under control.Kirkman's makes a probiotic with just this in it.

Aother option is to also make up some suaerkraut - to get L.

plantarum. If she won't eat the cultured cabbage even drinking the

fluid will have lots of good bacteria.

Ahha! Sheila, You just hit the nail on the head for me. I have been trying

to figure out how to get saurcraut in my daughter. I guess it doesn't matter

if she eats the craut but, she can get the juice from it and still benefit

from it. Thanks for sharing about this. Jenn & Kali 9 months SCD-----

Sheila,

Thanks for your help. My only question is that I recently read that
