Guest guest
Hi, because you will be taking in so much less nutritionally, it would not do you much good to drink coffee. Coffee strips your muscles of needed nutriants. Now a cup once I while, might be ok if your new tummy can handle it. Your goal is to optimize your nutritional intake after surgery as much as possible. I myself like a nice hot chai tea latte once in awhile *grin*. a " Susie G. Guest guest
Here's what the patient manual from Dr. R. says about coffee, under " Your Diet " in the post-op section, page 24: " Coffee, tea, sodas are not good choices because of their low potassium and vitamin content. " . Well, water has low potassium and vitamin content, too, and I drink that all day. I also either get a lot of postassium and vitamins in 1 or 2 V-8's or I take a potassium supplement. I think his point is that, particularly the first few weeks post-op, it is difficult to get in an adequate amount of calories and vitamins and he wants you to drink juices, instead of zero nutrition liquids, for that reason. And remember, your new body isn't going to use a lot of what you *do* eat because your new intestinal tract malabsorbs food. After one week, you are taking vitamin supplements three times a day, though, and after two weeks, you start to have a handle on what and how you will be eating, and you start making less and less " junk " choices, or, well, you experiement with " junk " things you used to like and find they don't taste so good anymore. Things that don't taste *great* don't get eaten, you don't want them. Things that have too much fat, no nutrition, pffft, why bother? Your mindset changes. This is a no-effort process. It is not like dieting. You may or may not like coffee after surgery, too (your tastes change). You especially may not like the coffee-mate. But then again, you may still love it. Each person has individual taste changes and tolerations that occur. The first week or so, though, you probably won't care what you get to drink as long as it's liquid, so may as well stick with the juices for a couple of weeks to get in your nutrition. As for why coffee isn't on my diet sheet, I gave up coffee two years ago before I quit smoking. I figured if I gave up coffee, it would be easier to quit smoking. I bulked up on potassium and vitamin c for a few days ahead of time, then just quit drinking coffee. I never did get the caffeine headache, even though I was a 2 pot a day coffee drinker (and a four pack a day smoker, too). I quit coffee for three weeks, then I quit smoking. I don't know if it helped or not, but I didn't have near the trouble quitting smoking that I had when I had tried and failed in the past. I always drank the coffee *precisely* for the caffeine (as an energizer and a diuretic) so I never could see the point in drinking de-caf. I've had a cup of de-caf now and then at a restaurant, but for the most part, I like water a lot now (*never* liked water when I drank coffee and smoked, either). Anyway, I just didn't think about putting the water on the diet list, but I'm drinking water most of the day. I have a cup on hand at all times. Kind regards, ( " the Barbie Wannabe " ) email: lindat@f... website: http://www.fourlane.com/lindat Stats: 47 years old 5'4 " , 249 lbs., Waist 45 Surgery date: May 18, 2000 Wt. @ 1 week May 25, 2000: 238, Waist 45, Upper Arm 17 Wt. @ 2 weeks, June 1, 2000: 238, Waist 45, Upper Arm 17 Wt. @ 3 weeks, June 8, 2000: 234, Waist 42, Upper Arm 15 Wt. @ 4 weeks, June 15, 2000: Note: Dr. Rutledge says that the initial weight you lose after the surgery in the first week or so is just water weight. I was concerned when I did not lose weight the second week. He explained this is because it takes the body longer to break down actual fat (and we come into the surgery " well nourished), so that true weight loss (fat loss) generally begins in the late second week to third week. He said a better measurement of actual fat loss than using a scale was to measure one's waist and upper arm. My abdomen was still slightly swollen the second week so that didn't help (so my waist was still 45) and since I had no prior measure for my upper arm, I can't tell you what it was before surgery, either). I mention this because it seems to be common for people to get very discouraged when they don't lose weight the second week. All of us are just sure we will be the only people to not lose weight with the MGB. Rest assured it is normal if you don't lose much or any weight the second week. > Dear Gang, > It's funny that the closer we seem to get to the big day the more we > post. Ok I have a question???
