Hi Kim,

My infant uses td-dmsa and td-glutithione as well. Her skin reacted very badly

to the original base of the creams (although I don't remember what the original

base was). After that, the pharmacy changed the base to emu oil. She has not

had any reaction to that base.

If you are even slightly concerned, I would request that they change the base

(make sure they don't change it to something soy either). It is probably better

to be safe than sorry. Getting on the right track in the first place is a lot

easier than back-tracking and having to recover.

I would certainly be worried. Individuals with a gluten allergy or

celiac disease are very often sensitive to topical forms of the

allergen. My son is allergic to wheat and his allergist has told us

to avoid topical exposures to products containing his allergens,

such as play-dough. In some cases this isn't practical and topical

exposure doesn't seem to be a problem, for instance when we must

use Elidel cream for my son's eczema. The cream contains soy oil,

and he has a soy allergy, but we've never seen a reaction. There

isn't a good substitute for Elidel and it can't be compounded, and

he seems okay with it.

Each person's sensitivity is different. However, with autistic kids

gluten can be a big offender. Since the TD-DMSA cream can be

compounded, I would contact the pharmacy and ask them for a

formulation that does not use any wheat (or other foods you may be

avoiding). Which pharmacy is it that is making TD-DMSA in a base

with wheat germ oil? If it's one of the big compounding pharmacies

that sells a lot of products to the ASD community, they will have a

lot of angry GFCF parents on their hands.

gluten free diet. She said the cream should be fine for her if she

has not had a reaction. My daughter is mod/severely autistic and I

would not know if she had a reaction to the cream as her behaviour

is quite erratic, and she has chronic GI issues.
