Guest guest
Since I am on SCD as well and I mainly breast feed my daughter, I don't know if this is off topic or not. I was wondering, of those of you who relactated, what did you use, (eg, reglan, herbs, something else?) and what effect did it have on you and your child. any bad experiences? thanks in advance maria mom to fiol asd 15mo
Guest guest
I will try to be brief since I don't want to get too OT. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. I used domperidone, and it was very effective with no apparent side effects for my VERY allergic child. The pills are small and you take 8 per day, and they do have medical-grade lactose, and it was my ONLY deviation from a very strict diet. I figured it was worth it - it was the only way relactaion would work for me. I used Reglan previously with disastrous effects, it robbed me of what small milk supply still remained. Domperidone rescued me and my son and brought back a small but sufficient milk supply. I only had to partially relactate. My son was 3 months old, nursing poorly from my one functioning breast (other breast is nonfunctional from cancer radiation treatments). I did not have much of a milk supply left due to pediatricians' bad advice to formula-feed. My son had great dificulty nursing from birth and did not latch or feed well til he was nearly 6 months. Relactation was very, very difficult and should not be attempted without a lot of commitment and a supportive husband or S.O. I was also on an elimination diet at the time, plus working full time and traveling for my job several times a month. I can't imagine having the strength to do it all over again (although managing an SCD for such a restricted child is probably as close as I've come since then). I pumped every 2 hours round the clock day and night after every nursing for 4 months. Then just after day nursings for 10 months. I was able to make enough milk to nourish him - barely - until he could start solids at 6.5 months. But he was always a little underweight and when he started solids he did gain a lot of weight, chubby (briefly) for the first time in his life. I also used fenugreek and some other herbs, which weren't much help. If your milk supply is in serious need of bolstering, I would highly recommend domperidone. It is not FDA-approved in the US, but is used throughout the rest of the world as a safer alternative to Reglan. Many women I know get it compounded in this country, though I have never bothered. Reglan has pretty bad side effects, I've never known a mother or a baby to not suffer some of the side effects. Please feel free to email if you have more questions. Suzanne ..
